Yesterday, the original Batmobile from the 1966 Batman television series went up for public sale for the first time ever at the Barrett-Jackson house in Scottsdale, Ariz. So how much did the George Barris-built car go for? And how much excitement was there buzzing about that auction house?

It’s great fun watching Barris, who built the Batmobile from the 1955 Lincoln Futura prototype car, get the crowd revved up. And it looks like it paid off; the winning bidder, Rick Champagne, paid $4.6 million for the classic car (with a $4.2 million bid; the rest was in fees). According to the Hollywood Reporter, that price tag ties the Batmobile with the the Aston Martin DB5 Sean Connery drove in Goldfinger for the highest price fetched by a movie car. Take good care of it, Mr. Champagne.
