While ringing in the New Year and pondering the passage of time, what better question to raise than wondering what time zone our space station sticks to as it whirls around our planet fifteen times a day. UTC -6 to coordinate with Houston? UTC +3 to coordinate with Moscow? Or something else?

UTC is Coordinated Universal Time, the modern replacement to ‎Greenwich Mean Time. While functionally identical, UTC has been the international scientific standard for time since 1950. It is based on the International Atomic Time, with sporadic leap-seconds to compensate for the slowing of the Earth’s rotation.
