A truly great work of art can win you over even if you’re seeing it under horrible conditions. But some conditions are so horrible, they push the limits of your ability to see a work’s qualities. Top image: Robocop. I saw it years after it came out, whilst traveling on a ferry from Russia to Japan. It was dubbed — ineptly — in Russian, and had Japanese subtitles. And I was totally transfixed.
