The Dark Knight may have been an international cultural juggernaut this year, but not everywhere, apparently; Warner Bros. announced yesterday they won’t be releasing Chris Nolan’s Batman movie in China due to “cultural sensitivities.”

According to Variety, Warners issued a statement about the decision that blandly explained,

Based on a number of pre-release conditions that are being attached to ‘The Dark Knight’ as well as cultural sensitivities to some elements of the film, we have opted to forego a theatrical release of the film in China.

“Cultural sensitives to some elements of the film” may, of course, translate to “Sorry about that whole Chinese accountant with the mobster money thing,” but even so, this decision is interesting – and an undoubted boon for the Chinese bootlegging business.
