Rumor has it that Apple is planning to release a Wi-Fi–enabled iPod by the end of the year. Component manufacturers in the far east claim that Apple has orders in for Wi-Fi modules for the music player, which would set up the iPod to compete directly with the Zune in the not-exactly-crowded Wi-Fi-enabled DAP market.

An iPhone-esque, widescreen iPod with Wi-Fi? Sounds good to me, as long as Apple learns from Microsoft's mistakes when it comes to implementing Wi-Fi on a music player.

DISCUSSION

I think Apple has a tendency to be far too worried about the perception of copying another company. Especially Microsoft. That is certainly part of the reason for the lack of a two button mouse, the lack of a battery replacement option and FM on an iPod, and so forth. When Apple does copy a feature, they act like they 're-invented' it, improving what was a questionable product by someone else that is now going to change our lives forever.

Personally, I would love to see Apple copy some more features. Every idea is a copy from someone or something else — so, who cares? Just add the features that matter to customers. Better than that, add the features that matter to me. Oh, and send me the products for free, too, because I'm broke.
