I hope you didn't have your heart set on that sexy 64GB SSD that Steve teased as an "option" during his keynote: the 1.8GHz version with the SSD drive standard costs a whopping $3,100. For comparison's sake, adding a 64GB SSD to a Dell laptop with a 128GB SATA drive standard is a $1,000 option. At Alienware, you'll pay $900 to upgrade to a 64GB SSD from a 320GB 5400RPM drive. Those are probably 2.5-inch SSDs, however. The 1.8-inch SSDs used in the Macbook Air are pricier, with prices looking to be around $1,300 on their own around the web. [Apple Store]

Holy cow...
That's nuts.
Holy Cow...
That's nuts. I don't want the SSD that bad :P
BULL SHARKS!
wow. apple, seriously, i'm diabetic i need my insulin!!
Quit forcing me into these kind of positions.
$300 for the processor bump, $999 for the SSD.
For the first time in a very long time I'm going to say it.
"Apple, I'm disappointed in you!"
Apple is putting the faithful to the test on this one. Will we buy it? Only time will tell.
Just to keep up with Apple's products. The average American would have to take out bank loans. And their kids will never go to college :P
It's 999 for the SSD (300 for the 1.8ghz).
Anyway...much to much
the ssd is the same price if you bought a pc with one so i don't feel apple is going to far.
Hmm the Macbook has a faster processor, more space, an optical drive, and 700 bucks cheaper...WOW...what the hell were they thinking? They should have made the Macbook LED backlit and green. Why would you make an entirely new Macbook? Its idiotic and this thing WILL NOT SELL WELL AT ALL.
Worst.Keynote.Ever
Its not $1300. its $999.
The other difference is the 1.8 proc which is $300 (take a look at the customization of the base model if you don't believe me).
Boo! No Blu-Ray or new Lcds! $1300 for ssd? Yeah!
And no slot for a Express/32 Cell card. Disappointing. WiFi isn't everywhere. CLose but no cigar on making a perfect travelers machine.
Ouch. That's going to hurt them in the teen market. Mom and Dad aren't gonna shell out the money for an Air when they can get a regular MB with better specs for a lower price.
It's just Stevie J & Co's polite way of informing us why it wasn't standard and that it's still safe to buy a 8GB iPhone.
Do not want... That price is crazy. I'd love a SSD. I'll just get an eee pc now.
A 64GB 2.5" SSD is 1500+ so even if the SSD upgrade cost 1300 (which it doesn't, it's only $1000) it's still a deal.
That is almost offensive.
SSD Air is already on its way to me (well, in 2-3 weeks). But I travel a ton and the most relevant factors for me are size (small) and battery life. Clearly this computer is not for everyone...
Go check out the price on froogle of a 64GB 1.8" SSD. $1300 is actually quite the steal.
fuck that
Good luck buying anything at the Apple Store, since it crashed a few minutes ago and hasn't come back up yet.
Wow, lame.
@daftrok: I agree. Will it sell, yes. Will it sell WELL? Probably not.
@utube2007: That should've been the title of this article.
But seriously, I'd rather put my money on a NAS.
Maybe....maybe they made this shitty thing so that people will buy the Macbook more! ITS THE PERFECT STRATEGY! IT MAKES THEIR RIDICULOUSLY OVERPRICED MACBOOK SEEM CHEAPER! BRILLIANT!
PATA? Thanks...
@Singlespeed: I'm sure they'll miss you terribly. I bet Steve might even send you a love note, begging you to come back.
@madoublet: Incorrect, sir. Better luck next time.
@extraextra: This laptop will sell extremely well.
I'm trying to figure out who this product is actually marketed for. It's not for the college student nor the gadget freak (me). Business use perhaps? I dunno, they got me on THIS one!
That 2GB of RAM? Looks to be non-upgradeable and is probably soldered on. It also shares it with the video card.
That is seriously screwed up.
@image18301: I agree...who is this targeting. It's very cool, but that only gets you so far.
People should stop whining about the SSD price. As several have pointed out, even $1000-$1300 is a good price for a 64GB 1.8" SSD right now. Apple doesn't set the price for this type of thing...they've got to buy it from somebody else. Apple isn't the Jebus.
Plus, IT'S AN OPTION. On a computer that YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY ANYWAY. The form-factor, battery life, etc. will be worth it to some, not to all.
Anyway, give it a few months and the price may just fall like a rock (like the iPhone did). Then half of you will be back whining because it's too cheap and not fair since you bought it right when it came out at full price.
@daftrok: Angry?
that's a total rip off. The only way this can possibly make sense is if Apple is making there own proprietary SSDs for the Macbook Air instead of having another company make the ssds.
Please update the story. It is not $1300 for the SSD it is $999. The second model on the front page also upgrades the processor.
@image18301: +1, Confused and Dazed here on this one as well
Were they handing out K.Y. at this keynote?
@EQC: Your right. Regardless of the actual SSD, you can access everthing that won't fit from the Web. It really doesn't matter how much the OPTIONAL 64Gb of memory is, most of use would never need it anyway.
It's going to sell just fine. Frequent travelers will pay $3000 for a ultra-light laptop without hesitating, at least from what I saw working at Best Buy.
It's not $1,300 extra for SSD... it's $1K extra. That computer just also has the faster 1.8 GHz processor, which is $300 extra.
@EQC: Well said sir!
WOW only $999.00 for a 64g SSD upgrade? That is awesome.
Broken out it is...
$999.00 for the upgrade to 64g ssd and
$299.00 for the upgrade to 1.8ghz processor
$999.00 for 64gig SSD is now bad at all. On newegg, a 64gig SSD sata drive costs $1533.99
Way to go Apple!!
Makes me want to actually own my first Apple.
Bob
I paid less for the new Mac Pro. Granted I didn't change too much specs wise.
oops... sorry. PEDANTICMOFO already covered that point.
@image18301: Seriously...all I can think of is business people, except that they tend to favor PCs over Macs. Might this be an effort to do something about that?
i'm more upset about the lack of the 160GB 1.8" drive from the iPod Classic not being a BTO option.
i'd never bother with the small 64GB flash drive anyway regardless of what the price increase was. but an 80GB max size when Apple has a ton of 160GB drives readily available seems like a stupid thing to do.
my current 160GB drive is perfect in my MacBook. with 80GB i'd have to do some trimming on the Mac side. and probably shitcan my Boot Camp partition entirely.
I'm not in the market for this, for the same reason I don't look at Porsches when shopping for a car: I like them but can't afford to own one. How stupid it would be to spew hate at the company Porsche (or Porsche enthusiasts) for that...?
Where is the dock for this baby?
I also do not know who this is targeted to. I can tell you right now that the MacBook Air will not be used at work. I only permit ethernet connexions for security purposes.
It's a little before it's time. I am all for no moving parts. The SSD model is pretty bullet proof, and likely it will be extremely reliable- perhaps the most reliable and durable Mac product since the 12" PowerBook (Or the eMate).
64Gb is enough. I don't need my entire iTunes library, a bunch of movies, etc..
I also think the removal of the optical drive makes sense. I wish they would offer a second HD in place of an optical drive. I have been happily running my MB with two HD and no optical drives. Then again, I am editing media and I love having a once piece editing deck when I am working off-site.
@tamoko: Preach on!
Seriously guys? Is ANYTHING Apple brings out marketed for everyone initially? Of course not. This computer is Apple's long overdue entry into the ultra portable market. Our company actually held out on updating their sales force laptops just to see if the Macbook Air rumors were true. Now that they are, we're puting in an order for 1,000 of them.
Will it sell? I'm reminded of the same stupid question when they released the iPhone...
I would rather spend a little more and go for a macbook pro. This simply isn't worth it at all to me.
