You'll probably be seeing Apple's newest "Vista Sucks, OS X Rules Your Face" ad, starring hilarious John Hodgman and perpetually besmirked Justin Long all over the web soon. Basically, the banner keeps pulling up bad Vista quotes as Hodgman hammers the emergency banner refresh, but neither of them are from actual reviews of Vista—even though that's what Hodgman calls them.
CNET's blurb about Vista being one of tech's "biggest blunders" is actually from an op-ed that Microsoft should dump the OS entirely, while the PC Mag snippet is the title of a column from January that proffers ways for Microsoft to start-over.
It's not a mind-blowing factual error to say the quotes are from reviews, or even that disingenuous—attack ads usually involve a roll in the mud—but it's worth pointing out there's a difference between a position and an actual review. Not to say that the spots aren't amusing—John Hodgman is a riot. Oh, and we're certain its debut the same week as Vista SP1's is a total coinky-dink. [TechEBlog]

yawn
Don't you have anything better to do than write about the stupid banners?
sorry to say but the commercials are really starting to suck.
big yawn...
Don't I have anything better to do than comment on this article about banners?
Get a new ad concept, please!
I'm not an Apple fan, but those were great ads. Key word there: "were"
When these ads first started to air (a year ago or more?), I actually thought they were pretty funny.
Now they are just annoying. And I like macs.
Either way, Vista still sucks.
I use a Mac and even I am starting to get annoyed. I mean come on, Dell and HP are starting to step up their designs, Microsoft is working on its next Gen platform, and the macbook pro is a 5 year old design. Lets get on it Apple before you starting going for Microsoft's throat. I love their designs, but the Mac Pro, Macbook Pro, Macbook, and Cinema Displays could all stand for a refresh. Hopefully Centrino 2 (Montevina) will provide enough technological changes to prvoke a series refresh for the above lines.
Yawn, these commercials were annoying after 2 months, yet they keep making more...
I always find then very funny, I own a mac and a windows pc.
What a lame attack on Vista. I didn't know apple would stoop this low. I enjoy Vista, and I betcha a quarter of my life, that "MAC OSX" isn't bug free either, what ARE the "upgrades" anyways?
vista works well, needs more configuration than XP needed, but basically its the same system, it has dx10, that is a big difference, i mean, they really did something good with dx this time, no wonder its not in any WinXP update, most of the old software runs without problems and that is something you cant say about 'macos', because those new macs are PCs, yeah, p-c-s, they wear intel cpus, pc ram, pc vga(s), pc hdds, they use all pc bus-types, damm, they are PCs in disguise, oh wait, there is a difference, you see, there is a tiny little chip in their PC motherboard, it has an apple, it does nothing except crying 'IM A MAC' everytime someone ask him, thats why his linux-clone aka 'macos' knows its the right pc to be installed on, so the disguise will be complete and some fashion-victim will pay a zillion bucks for an overpriced PC, err mac, its a mac, or is it?
Apple sucks, yawn.....
I would love for someone to come out with an anti-iPod ad. Give them a taste of their own medicine.
iPod Shuffle Battle:
Guy with Shuffle: Hey did you check out my new Shuffle? The 1 GB model now only costs 50 bucks and a 2 GB model for 70 bucks! Pretty sweet deal!
Guy with ZEN Stone: Yeah its better, but this ZEN Stone has a 1 GB player for 35 bucks. Or A 2 GB player with a speaker for 50 bucks.
Guy with Shuffle: ...Thats...pretty cheap. I--
Guy with ZEN Stone: Or a 2 GB player with a screen but no speaker for 55 bucks. Or a 2 GB player with a screen an a speaker for 60 bucks.
Guy with Shuffle: Well the shuffle has a clip, so--
Guy with MuVo T100: Or this direct USB connecting MP3 player with one button Bass Boost and 4GB capacity for 70 bucks.
Guy with Shuffle: ...Uh...

iPod Nano Battle:
Guy with Nano: Hey did you see the new Nano? Its got a 2" screen so I can watch videos on it! A 4GB model costs 150 bucks and an 8 GB model costs 200 bucks! 50 bucks cheaper than the last generation!
Guy with Creative ZEN: Indeed it is. But this ZEN has a 2.5" screen just like the iPod and just slightly bigger than the Nano. It also has an SD expansion slot so you can transfer photos directly to your player. They have a 2 GB model for 80 bucks, a 4 GB model for 100 bucks, an 8 GB model for 150 bucks--
Guy with Nano: --But the Nano has 24 hour music playback and 4 hour video playback.
Guy with Creative ZEN: 30 hours music and 5 hours video for ZEN.
Guy with Nano: Oh well...whats a couple hours, huh.
Guy with Creative ZEN: They also have a 16 GB model for 200 dollars and a 32 GB model for 300. And it can play iTunes.
Guy with Nano: R...Really?
Guy with ZEN: Yeah...

Guy with ZEN in background: Did I mention voice recording and FM radio?

@pharago: Have you even played any semi-modern game on Vista? It's painful.
The new iPod Touch ad with Brendan Benson's "What I'm Looking For" is better than any ad Microsoft has ever put on the air.
Hey Apple, more of those ads - less Hodgman/Long, please.
+ Watch video
When PC commercials never mention the Mac, and instead Mac commercials focus obsessively on the PC, who comes off as a (sore) loser, I wonder?
@daftrok:
I'm not a fan of iPods, but I've had a creative player, and it was nice. However, all someone would have to do to counter those ads is say, "Have you used their software?"
@daftrok: Damn, you should contact them, that iPod Nano one was pretty really funny. I want a ZEN now.
*pulls emergency refresh lever*
Damn.
*pulls it again*
Damn
*pulls it again*
Why won't this stupid story go away?
@Roflcopter_Down: of course i did, in fact, i do that all the time, thats why im saying dx10 rocks.
the choice for the article on the left in the ad is simply laughable. if i were apple i wouldn't be trying to draw attention to their new malware practices.
Can we get some posts that aren't flamebait for once... damn.
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!: I have. It works fine.
Are these ads still helping them sell computers? For those who have seen them, I'm sure we are all getting a little tired of them. I think they need some new ideas for ads.
guy 1 - hi, i like my computer as a piece of technology, one that i can maybe make to look the way and work the way i want. i don't think having proprietary e-mail and photo software is all-that-great. in fact, i can run the illest free shit you ever seen!
guy 2 - hi, i'm all "new agey" and like to show people that i am an individual. it's expensive to assert one's individuality, and apple prices my soul anywhere between 1100 and 1500 dollars, but to really streamline my technologically-aware and easy-on-the-eyes aesthetic, i could throw away 2100-2500 for a metal case that everyone in my neighborhood has-the truth being that their metal computer-thingies make me feel bad about myself, and kind of made me question who i was, so i chose one too!
pc all teh way. and vista aint bad either. stupid apple people, go express yourself using apple's creative software suite, and take all those crazy risks so you can make it out there, if anyone decides that your crappy re imagination of some already-existing genre of crap, you can say you made it, and that your soul has completely left the realm of humanity.
me? bitter? no.
apples are peer pressure in material form! (awk phrasing, tru fact!!!)
The first ad they aired like this was funny. The rest were just arrogant and lame. I don't need someone to tell me how much Vista sucks...I have to experience it every day. (Well, not anymore, I went back to XP).
The iPod and iPhone ads are SOOO much better. I am somewhat of a "fanboy" (if you want to call it that) but these ads just plain SUCK. If Apple were to stop airing these annoying, smug, arrogant commercials, maybe more people would start buying their products. Before I bought my iMac, I repeatedly told myself that I wouldn't buy from a Mac purely on principle. (Then I bought an iPhone, and I was convinced otherwise).
Advice to Apple: Instead of basing your entire advertising campaign on how much Windows sucks, try talking about ways in which OS X is superior.
@FranklinTurtle:
Apple stole the software from Creative, so I'm not sure what you mean.
Doods, i run a cool new Dos system and my stuff is totally stable, i can run any program just by typing run and the name followed by EXE or BAT and i have awesome games like blood, duke nukem, and doom! Heroes of might and magic 1? I GOT IT. Word Perfect, make the switch!
Other than these ads, though, I really don't see why people hate Apple (or Microsoft, for that matter) with such passion. Sure, you may prefer one operating system over another, but that doesn't mean the other one sucks by default. I prefer Leopard over Vista, but that doesn't mean I won't ever buy from Microsoft again. Next time they release an OS, I'll give it a try and reevaluate my decision. Until then, Leopard is right for me. But that doesn't mean someone else can't have their own opinion.
And just because someone prefers one over the other doesn't make them a fanboy.
I guess my point it that I am tired of everyone hating so much on both Microsoft and Apple. Can't anyone find any value in another person's opinion?
yawn...
i like how apple keeps putting out these attack ad's and Microsoft does nothing in return... they are probably sitting their in the meetings saying "5th graders..."
why does apple feel like they need to prove something... they should just let their product speak for itself.. Microsoft didn't get big bitching about how they were better.. and still doesn't.. they just make a product and some people love it and some people hate it...
In my opinion these ads dont convince me to use apple computers, but to choose something thats not vista i.e linux or even xp. Doesnt seem like the smartest thing to just attack vista as an ad campaign.
I really don't understand why this campaign has gone on so long. Apple has shown it can make clever, catchy ads that highlight their products without having it be a transparent and hackneyed attempt to cut into market share.
bitfactory's example is a great one- a well-designed ad that does nothing but show the features. It's not the traditional brand of elitism, it's like all they're saying with it is "look how cool this is!", and they're right.
To me comparative ads are like a person hitting the enemy in the balls or running away during a battle. It is a cheap shot and a sign of losing. You might gain more but you'll lose your dignity.
iPod Touch Battle:
Guy with Touch: Hey check out this iPod Touch. You can run Safari on it and it has a 3.5" touch screen! And they came out with a software kit so now we can get cool programs! They have a 8 GB model for 300 bucks, a 16 GB model for 400 bucks and a 32 GB model for 500 bucks!
Guy with Archos 605 Wifi: That's a good deal. But this Archos 605 Wifi has a 4.3" touchscreen and runs the Opera browser. And has flash support so you can watch YouTube without waiting for them to convert the format. And it's Linux based so it already has a gob of programs available online now.
Guy with Touch: Yeah well mine slips into the pocket easier than that.
Guy with Archos: True the Touch is easier on the pocket but this one's easier on the wallet. You can get a 4 GB model with an SD slot for 200 bucks. Or a 30 GB model for 300 bucks. Or an 80 GB model for 350 bucks. Or a 160 GB model for 400 bucks. And it can support more video formats.
Guy with Touch: ...Look how shiny it is! Apple makes great looking products that--
Guy Archos: And it has two built in speakers. And you can look at PDF files. And for 100 bucks more you can buy a DVR dock that allows you to record your TV shows and output from your Archos to your TV at DVD resolutions. It also allows you to stream content from your PC to your TV. And the screen has a higher resolution so you don't have to scroll around pages or zoom out just to find what you're looking for.
*Shows Archos logo and site*
In background:
Guy with Touch: Can it play iTunes?
Guy with Archos: No.
Guy with Touch: Ha!
Guy with Archos: Just kidding, it can.
What is it rank on Apple day? First Apple's Software update and now this?
Too bad the Apple haters will take the time to join in on the Apple-bashing, but won't take the time to notice that Giz is obviously not filled with Apple fanboys.
Am I the only one that noticed the headline? "Apple makes good on its promise to push Safari for Windows through iTunes."?
Haha. How awesome of them.
@ACDlite: Agreed, so agreed I can't agree enough. Its a computer. Not a religion. No need to get up in arms. Enjoy the stuff you enjoy and talk with the people who enjoy said items as well; and don't get up in arms when someone doesn't think that the system use is the most perfect thing they have ever seen. We all have different tastes and different preferences. Can't the fanboys grow up and act a little more like adults, choosing to discuss the differences and reasons for their preferences rather than using foul language and invoking hate for everyone on the opposing side as well as their mothers every-time someone disagrees with them?
"Hi, I'm a-"
*Changes channel.*
@ACDlite: I get the impression that most people don't hate Apple, as a product or company. What they hate is smug, self-satisfied, "my shit don't stink" Apple fanboys. Therefore, anything that shows that Windows isn't as bad as they make it out to be or that Macs aren't as perfect as they'd have us believe is fair game.
Typical childish and pathetic Apple tactics. We've all come to expect this. *yawn*
What Apple need to remember, is that the average PC user appears to have a very short attention span, and a low tolerance for humor.....
C: ERROR 7204 - SENSE OF HUMOR FAILURE - SAD LOOSER Y/N
@MINI Driver:
What's a "sad looser"?
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!:
Everyday, oddly, they all run about as fast as they did on my XP install. It's weird what happens when you play game with decent hardware.
About the add, these are getting old. I wouldn't mind, but nothing bugs me more than FUD, and that's all Apple runs on. Facts are much less childish.
i don't get how the article"apple pushing safari through itunes" is a good thing for apple because i sure as hell don't want itunes with my quicktime and safari with itunes
@MINI Driver: I knew it wouldn't be long before you were here. PC users have very short attention spans? Is that why Mac users have to have shiny toy computers?
'Looser'?
Funny.
What Microsoft knows and understands is that they don't need to bash apple to maintain their overwhelming market share. Despite the millions and millions that apple has dumped into this ridiculous and tired ad campaign is very, very little inroad into MS's dominant market share. These ads are now doing the opposite: justin long, the 'apple' is a douchebag while john hodgman is cool and the one people want to hang out.
Way to go, apple!
@Roflcopter_Down: Wants you to follow HIM!:
Games? Games are all on the xbox 360 now .. I haven't played a pc game for a long, long time.
@Gofastmazda:
What Apple know is, just like in politics, attack ads work.
See their rise in market share as proof.
And if you're really going to include all those sad b@st@rd cubicle PCs in your calc - you're more desperate than I thought!
@FredicvsMaximvs: You have a point, but I have met people in everyday life that love nothing more than to spew hatred for Apple or Microsoft. Can't we all just get along?
And I completely agree that neither Microsoft nor Apple is perfect in any capacity. Any well-founded criticism against them is completely fair game, in my opinion. I don't, however, condone pointless diatribes devoid of any substance. Comments like "Apple sucks, yawn....." or "apples are peer pressure in material form! (awk phrasing, tru fact!!!)"-such comments reek of immaturity.
I can't remember the last time a discussion on this topic was conducted objectively. For some reason that I cannot comprehend, people LOVE to get fired up at the "Mac vs PC" battle.
Now I'm no political scientist (I'm 15 for God's sake), but I think it all comes down to a basic human desire to be on the "winning team". I can't speak for everyone, but have hopes that one day, we can move past these silly and meaningless tirades and onward to better, more substantial conversations.
yeah heaven forbid they actually post an actual review else that would probably turn everyone away from vista huh
John Hodgeman rules, i love him on the daily show and his small role in flight of the conchords, then they have some douche bag tard as the apple guy, i hated that guy in dodgeball, his face wants me to hit it
@Gofastmazda:
whoops sorry dude, i didn't see what you wrote and wrote exactly the same, glad to see someone else who sees the problem with these ads :)
@MINI Driver: Can you please post proof that Apple's market share is working by showing the increased market share that apple has seen since the start of these ads? Heresay just doesn't cut it.
As far as cubicle PCs, why wouldn't I count those? You know that you would if they were Macs!
