BitTorrent Plugin Detects ISPs Raping Your Torrents

azureus-frog.jpgVuze/Azureus actually operates a legit video delivery business using torrent, so they've been among the most vocal opponents of ISPs throttling torrents. To help build their case and create a detailed log of every ISP that scrambles torrents, along with their particular poison—short-circuiting uploads or general bandwidth caps, for instance—they've released a plug-in for their BitTorrent client that detects ISP torrent sabotage. On your end, it keeps track of interrupted connections and lets you know if your ISP is hosing you, and you can share the results with Azureus, if you'd like. They've already got a wiki going of the worst torrent ISPs, with Cablevision, RCN and Adelphia pulling the same tactics as Comcast. [Torrentfreak via DSL Reports]

  • Love the Wiki list. DAMN YOU, COGECO!

  • Cablevision? really? My torrents go incredibly fast with Optimum Online. Faster than they do here in college.

  • No Mac Version yet. But they say its coming.

  • @lafond66: All cable vision does is prevent seeding, I see nothing wrong with that.

  • Awesome.
I mean the Wiki link not the fact that the bastard POS ISPs are trying to choke out torrents.

It's a good link for the fact that we have Cox where I am and it looks like they only limit bandwidth for accounts with a high traffic volume, and don't put a cap on torrents or deny seeding. Good 2 know, as I have had suspicions of Cox sabotaging my torrents but I think at the time, now that I think about it, it must have been a setting on my end.

  • pretty sure ACS in Alaska recently started doing this. first it was just bittorrent traffic. but now it seems that when i have bittorrent running at all my entire connection goes in the shitter.

spending $100/mo for a 3Mb internet connection is already pretty outrageous... even more so when i find out i'm not actually paying for a real-life internet connection at all but rather a "whatever-the-phone-company-thinks-i-should-be-allowed-to-use-it-for-based-on-random-whims" connection.

good thing my contract just ended. going to move to a cable modem as soon as i can get the line installed. faster and for $30 more than i already pay i can get cable television and a DVR (less torrents needed then anyway).

  • The multimedia battle continues...It's absolutely amazing to think about how these situations with OpenNet and censorship will affect us in 5 years....I don't want to get political but...ok, i do. Go BARRACK! Yes, I said it.

  • Well shiver me timbers. Nice to see the pirate ships have a new weapon.

  • I'd gladly share those sort of datums to help out Azureus, except their client is so inferior to uTorrent it isn't really worth it.

  • @Jimbuck: You mean Barack?

  • It could be worse. Comcast suspended my connection for excessive bandwidth usage, citing a terms of service agreement that may be changed at any time.

This isn't too much of an issue yet, however with HD video becoming more prevalent I think more users will have similar problems in the future.

  • @ViperBorg: Phonetically, I placed the additional R in there to give it more emphasis. Similiar to the way tony the tiger insists on telling everyone how "Grreat!" his frosted flakes are. I do appreciate the gesture Viper. :)

  • @Monty: YEARRGH!

@lafond66: So does mine. Often I've had large multi-GB files coming in at over 200kb/s with no problem. It's great.

  • @lafond66:
I'd say preventing seeding is pretty bad.

  • @Kaiser-Machead:
On Verizon's FiOS in NYC I was getting about 2MB/s from private torrent sites.

    @do_tell: Time to switch!

  • @lafond66: My friend has had cablevision for a while and he has optimum boost and whenever he uses limewire or a torrent program he gets a not saying that if he keeps using those programs (he's a power downloader btw) they'll be forced to send his isp and information to the FCC
he basically gets 5 chances every month.
Maybe they just dont like him.
Too bad i dont like azerus i never got good download speeds with them even when i tweaked the settings.

  • Qwest DSL does too.

I've found this out by doing my own testing by using www.speedtest.net.

  • uTorrent FTW

  • I dont know what it is then... I'm on Cablevision's Optimum Online and my torrents never go over 200kbps. I was sure they were being throttled but according to the wiki thats not the case.

Anyone know what else it could be? Or is that just the kind of speeds everyone gets on public torrents?

  • The problem is, BitTorrent users ARE actually gobbling up bandwidth from other broadband customers. Especially in rural areas where bandwidth is at a premium.

But the responsibility lies with the provider to guarantee their up/down speeds regardless of what sort of usage is occurring. And sapping bandwidth from anybody is an awful practice.

  • @michaelportent: maybe they shouldn't oversell their capacity then? it is hardly something the consumer should be blamed for. either sell what you say you will sell or don't. but make it clear upfront.

  • if only the plugin worked for uTorrent...hope they make one.

  • This is one of the few things that makes AT&T/Bellsouth worth it! NO throttling at all.

  • this is good.

  • @Zenshai: If you're using Az, check to see if the automated throttling is enabled. They have a function built whose purpose (I think) is to try and defeat the bittorrent throttling. You can look in the lower right corner to see what you're current throttle limit is. It gimped my downloads til I turned it off, but then again, I'm not a power downloader, so they probably don't mind as much that I max out my connection for 10-20 minutes every once in a while.

on a possibly related note, i've noticed within the last few weeks that my internet will lag horribly for no apparent reason (with no BT running). It's hard to tell if i'm being throttled by some bad algorithm, or its just shitty comcast service. the latter is always possible since they basically feel free to split their connection signals until it becomes so bad people complain. and then they usually try to tell you it would all be fine if you just had better wiring to your unit (technically possible, but it wouldn't be necessary if they didn't fuck up the source signal so much to being with)

  • Everyone is screaming against Comcast - and according to Azureus' Wiki - Comcast only block Seeding - but only then to a certain extent_ This doesn't seem to help the case against Comcast_

I'm not too happy with them by any means - they are my service provider for internet/TV - but they may be throttling in certain locations and not others_

I can Seed/ upload/ download torrent all day long_ I typically have mine capped so they stop at a certain point - but otherwise not too many issues_

I have been talking with folks who have Comcast in various areas of the country and what we're noticing is more of a limitation on the total advertised thru-put_ My account says I should be getting 6Mbps down and 256Kbps up and I haven't noticed anything near these marks_

In contrast I work at a major university and they are on an Internet Backbone [2 of them in fact] and the up/ down thru-put is significantly different from home to office_ In one regard this should be normal - but I can use a traffic Stat monitor [same App at work and home] and it shows just how much incoming and outgoing traffic is passing by_

    Comcast is a giant whore-poration_

  • @Jimbuck: you do know BaRRack is against free speech, right?

  • No Linux or Mac support either.
Would have been nice if they listed the system compatibility on the plugin website.
It's kind of a gip when a Java based application doesn't work across systems.

  • This is good AND bad.
Good because people will have more info on the service they are paying for. Thus allowing them to choose and pay for good services.

On the other hand, good ISPs will end up having a harder time being so... because if too many heavy P2P users migrate to this or that ISP, they'll eventually have some bandwidth problems if they don't upgrade their equipment....

  • @mrhammerstein: No he's not.

  • @uberfu:
Comcast actually sent me a nasty E-mail a while back because I supposedly downloaded an episode of Battlestar Galactica using Bit Torrent, crying about copyright infringement blah blah blah, they threatened to cut off my service. The thing that got me so mad was that they are so retarded as to make available only the first part of a two part episode of that show on their "on demand", I waited two weeks for them to update it and they never did, so i used the means available to me to see the conclusion. My feeling is they need to get off their over paid lazy asses and provide a great service for their highly priced cable , if not, then mind their own business of raping the consumer with the monopoly on broadband they have for now, but hopefully not forever.

  • P.S. When Comcast dies, I'll piss on their grave:)
