Michael Dell, the king of Dell, just previewed his company's smallest and greenest desktop PC yet at FORTUNE Brainstorm: GREEN. There's no name for this mini green PC, shown rendered above, but it's 81% smaller than a mini tower and 70% less energy-consuming. It's also shipped in recycled and recyclable packaging, and look a whole lot like those cheapo Sun workstations that colleges love(d) to use. As long as this machine is at least as powerful as a laptop (we don't mean an Eee PC), we're all for Dell's enviro-conscious direction.

Curious what the price is too, since it uses less hardware. Thing probably overheats like a mofo though.
Looks attractive...however... its Vista. Props Dell for finally hitting the eco market.
Looks GREAT. Too bad the monitor looks 1999.
They could have integrated the thing into their award winning monitors ... haha, i said award winning :)
Depending upon the specs, this has the potential for making a great MediaPC for the living room!
Small and green doesn't always mean cheap. Or is it the other way around.
SunRay you mean?
To me it's strangely reminiscent of Dell's old semi-all-in-one WebPC... Only turned on its side, detached from the LCD tray and looking more like an external hard disk or optical drive.
wonder what the specs are
nice computer graphics
but they would ship it in a refrigerator box
@Michai: so long as it has at least 2GB ram it should run vista fine.
Going green is wonderful for consumer technology so long as the devices aren't forfeiting usability. Otherwise it will soon find it's way to the dump and only add to the problem.
@Seiven:
haha I was just thinking the same thing.
as long as it can handle the basics is cheap, and reliable, then it'll probably be successful. 2 questions though. does it have a disc drive and what OS does it use?
it seems to me that thats the focus now is deveoping a cheap yet reliable system. again...why not. it makes perfect sense to. the only thing you cant do on systems like that are big fancy technical things that no one buying it would want to do anyway (at least no on that machine).
For an office environment I think this would be great. Lower power consumption, smaller foot print, and it doesn't need to be THAT powerful to do what someone absolutely needs to do. And if they're willing to go with an alternative OS the specs could be a lot lower than for Vista really.
@Seiven: exactly. Maybe they should have their shipping dept. talk to their design dept.
Looks cool to me.
AWESOME!
I can't wait to see this wireless powered computer and monitor, and wireless connect to everything...
hmmm... I have this feeling that it ain't wireless powered as the picture suggest, and that monitor doesn't have some sort of wireless DVI/Display Port system.. does it?
My post is not showing!!!!! Arrr screw Gizmodo... their system is based on a cheap gadget!
Nowq I bet as soon as I will post this, I'll see my older post pop-up... Watch this.
My advice to Michael Dell is:
-Keep it under $300
-Allow for easy upgrades
-NO WINDOWS
kthnxbaibai!
Offer it with XP, and this will be the new desktops I get at work for people. I am about sick of climbing around on the floor.
Bonus, XP would be more efficient than Vista, so even greener.
XP vs. Vista fanboy-a-thon START!!!
Does it come in black? And it has to be sub $600...to win me over...
Integrated graphics here we come...
that's photoshopped!!!
LMAO
Yeah - but can I:
- swap out the graphics card?
- upgrade the HD?
- does it have a DVD or Blu-Ray Player?
- Wireless-N?
- at least 4GBs of RAM?
- what kind of video output does it have?
- run multiple monitors?
Sorry_ I'll be more impressed when they release an Eco-Friendly Desktop Level system that can handle the latest MMPOG - run 3D Animation or Video Compositing software without blinking_
All this is - is the equivilent of the Toyota Prius_ Yeah it's Eco-Friendly - but can it do 0-60 in 4 seconds or haul 10 Tons of rock?
.
Giz - FYI - someone really needs to tweak the Posting Mechanism for your website !!
sez dell to the naysayers hatin on their current recyclable shipping containers that are supposedly irresponsible: TFSU fools!
What is that now, like, 4 or 5 mini desktops available for world consumers. Cmon component makers, let me build my own. Can't wait to get my hands on the ultra-super-mini-micro goodness.
IT probably come with an Intel integrated 3100 graphics card on a custom micro-MoBo. It will utilize notebook sized RAM and processor. Chances are it will be a slower Penryn (45nm) C2D chip and probbaly come with 2GB standard (4GB max), which means to RAM slots. Price will be probably start $399 and go to $699 depending on HW configuration.
Small and custom has never been cheap in the computer world. And I suspect the focus on 'green' is to make the higher price seem more appealing.
Robin: Holy rotten apples batman the hater meter is going off the scale.
Batman: I know dickey You'd think the Evil Gates monster was behind this
I guess asus's pc (i forget what its called (the mac mini imposters thats way bigger) finally got some worthy competition.
Hopefully dell doesnt give people crappy ass hardware. And low specs that cant even play a movie.
I doubt it though if its going to have a lot of hype im sure they'll try their hardest to impress us.
And if anythign they'll probably have an adapter for fans if the thing ever gives any issues for overheating.
And my guess is that it will be shipped in a box that is 3'x3'x'3...
:)
Thats actually a not bad looking machine. Wonder how much
The PC component looks OK, but gimme that monitor. That thing looks sweet.
Hmmm... more specialized design = less upgradeability = planned obsolescence in a 'sexy' green wrapper...
Why not make proprietary plugs and voltages so we need to rewire our house every time we get a new gadget?
The future is not green.
FAIL.
@discomonkey:
If it's cheap then you just bin it when it's done.
In an environmentally friendly fashion of course.
My itty-bitty vaio is smaller than that and it does o.k. for work stuff and tooling around. I wouldn't try to play Crysis on it or anything, but it's ok for every day uses. Of course, it has XP.
@Leonard Nimrod:
what he said, except starts at 499 and come w/1gb of ram standard. I'm actually wondering if they'll integrate the RAM onto the mobo so once you get it, you're not upping it.
@discomonkey:
and oh yeah, comes with 80gb 2.5" SATA
maybe even a pricey leap for SSD (and an even "greener" footprint?)
Looks kinda like it has iPod nanoesque casing....wonder if it burns.....
@uberfu:
Did you see the post about the return of the Banhammer?
Your:
.
Its distracting and pointless, its even worse then the "First Post!" annoyances. because you must think you are special. As you've been told before, RTFA.
I have RTFA, but please no more pointless dots.
looks like one of the old Maxtor external hard drives but is probably a lot bigger
Dell said it'd be between $500 and $700. And check it out, it's wrapped in bamboo! Check the link: [earth2tech.com]
Its amazing how much dell copies apple and how long it takes them to do it. If you want a true computer get the machines they try to be. Get a mac.
wow.. how cool.. $500-$700 is cheap! i should of wait for my last pc
At least they did a better job than the green PCs Wal-Mart has been carrying. You know, with the ones that have an oversized case just because consumers ill associate the size with more power.
@xint: But if you do upgrades you'll be taking away the greenness of it.
Bamboo...?
Poor starving pandas.
Damn you Dell! Damn you to Heck!!!
FAIL
/Climbs down off throne
I say, that actually has this Mac user's eyebrow (just one) raised in mild intrigue...
/Climbs back up on throne
;)
Remember before everybody jumped on the GREEN bandwagon. Everyone that had efficient electronics were just referred to as "Energy Star". When I think of GREEN I think of something that uses some type of renewable energy source or has the capability to breakdown and not create landfill waste. I don't see this product doing either.
@LindsayJoy: 'wonder if it burns'
Why, how fast are you planning on over-clocking it?
the hospital here uses WYSE computing "stations"..
they aren't much bigger than a external hard drive case.
No windows? Are you serious? What planet are you on? Gimme Vista any day. Seriously.
@chinook11: I'm Luke Skywalker! I'm here to rescue you!!!
agreed about the nice monitor
it needs sum work for shure
its a PC.... thats all that has to be said.
