Apparently, the only thing crazier than Crank 2: High Voltage's plot (Jason Statham survives falling a thousand stories from a helicopter, thanks to his super adrenaline heart, which is stolen by a really old Chinese dude, and his mechanical replacement needs to be constantly zapped, hence the awesome title) is the cameras they're using to shoot it. They're straight from Best Buy and Circuit City: Canon's $1000 HF10 and XH A1 (now about $3500), though they're shooting with up to 12 simultaneously, and plan to destroy loads of them throughout the process.
Interestingly, they moved away from using another RED camera because of the size and the fact that they can be as fussy as 35mm film cams. So there's definitely a pro market for $3000 pocket-sized Scarlet beyond the obvious prosumer angle—it's small, cheap and shoots at an insane res. The other takeaway is that consumer cams have really gotten to be pro, or nearly pro level, which is a great thing for the rest of us. Though Crank 2 might not be. [Collider, Thanks Steve!]

Just a note that they didn't use Red for the first Crank (was it even out at the time?); they used Red for Game, their most recent production, which hasn't hit theaters yet.
what the... they must have use a shovel to scoop
jason's character off the pavement and reconstituted
in some crack or something. that's sure out there and then again "crank" was out, too.
I thought the guy died in the end of the first one... Oh, I just spoiled the first movie for anyone who hasn't seen it...
ah i loved crank!
@jbhitter24: Easily one of my favorite movies. There's so many little things you notice when you watch it again.
I wonder if they go hdmi out-> capture station for shooting with the hf10. much better image than the low data rate video you'll get with the flash storage.
I've done a quick test with my hv30's hdmi out to prores hq and it was comparable to our RED downresed to 1080 prores. Comparable in the sense that a quick(properly done) shot could probably be cut in with red footage without the end user noticing.
*end viewer rather than end user
Sam: uuh.... did you WATCH crank? he CLEARLY didn't die at the end of the first one. pretty dumb to say you spoiled the first movie for anyone who hasn't seen it by saying that he died.... when anyone who read between the parentheses would have already read a spoiler proving you to be wrong.
"Jason Statham survives falling a thousand stories from a helicopter, thanks to his super adrenaline heart..."
Nope.... they're going to kill off the main character in the first movie.... then make a sequel, with the same person, playing the same main character... name and all. Yeah.... THAT would be logical.
All I know is Crank was an awesomely rediculous movie that I will watch time and time again.
I might check out the sequel when it hits theaters if it doesn't look as dumb as I thought the original looked.
i would love to see more, LOTS more, hollywood movies being made with pro-sumer or even lower level gear. that can only be inspirational to a new generation of filmmakers.
its going to be cool to see how they bring him back to life. He did fall from a helicopter and bounce off a car LOL!...
@mariogalaxyman: Ugh. I never, ever, EVER want to watch that "film" again.
@ElementalDragon: Play nice.
Guess I got to go back and watch it again, cause I sure as hell missed where it said he survived.
So what the movie sucked in reality talk. Like you stiffs wouldn't have sex in public to save your life? FTW!
FYI: I use the ringtone from his phone in the movie.
@TheGeektoriousBIG: I'm glad I'm not the only one that stole the ringtone. :)
Chev Chelios's eyes popped open after his body landed on the car, bounced up, and landed on the pavement. Cut to credits. That was ambiguous enough to indicate he may have survived, which the sequel now officially indicates is what happened.
Consmer cams aren't getting pro. The "high end" resolution is just stagnant. Nothing projects at over 1080 so the recording technology has caught up. 4K and 5K are what pro level resolution is. Gizmodo even did a review to show how far off 1080 is from 5K: [gizmodo.com] .
Is it as good as Ghostfacers?
"Ghost-FACERS!"
I thought that movie was gonna be stupid....and it was, but it was a lotta fun too. I really don't know where they could go with it after that first one.
I loved Crank for it's sheer over the toppiness. Then Shoot Em Up came out, and everywhere that Crank lacked, Clive Owen made up for.
Crank is awesome, Shoot Em Up is EPIC.
Here's to the modern day -sploitation films.
@ElementalDragon:
Yea really, everyone knows: Heart + Adrenaline = Superman. I mean, who even cares that the impact of his body on the ground would have liquified his brain, it's called suspension of disbelief people.
Jason Statham = I'd hit it so hard, there'd be dents.
I loved Crank, precisely because it was what it wanted to be... pure popcorn with no redeeming social value. perfect.
I like that everyone is suggesting that #2 will be stupid because of the premise, when number 1 had such a LOGICAL premise! :P
Seriously, I love that they are making a sequal and making the theory behind so crazy. Not all sci-fi has to be blade runner. Bring it on!
The first movie was TERRIBLE. Anyone who liked it has no right to ever comment on a movie again and the sad fact that it sold enough tickets and dvd's to warrant a second take on it is just incredibly sad.
No crank was not a popcorn movie. Popcorn movies are entertaining and Crank had no redeeming quality.
I've got an HF100 (same as the HF10, but without the built-in 16GB flash memory). I have to say the picture quality is quite good, but there's definitely noise in the dark areas of the image. I make indie short films and corporate info movies with it, but, I wouldn't rate the image quality quite high enough for the silver screen.
@SuppleMonkey: @parad0x360: THANK YOU.
For a second there I thought the whole Gizmodo readership had gone crazy.
1. the sex in public scene made that movie extra special
2. jason statham is just really really great in films. especially in films written/directed by Guy Ritchie
3. I think hot people should f4@# on camera and let us common folk pay to watch 'em (I'm not talking pron here, people, I'm talking Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt getting paid 50 million $$ to f$#@ each others' brains out - don't tell me we wouldn't all pay 10 bucks to watch THAT! They'd make a KILLING doing that.
@SuppleMonkey & @parad0x360: yes
I'm still trying to scour Crank from my memory.
@banmojo: you're sick
Chev Chelios: Does it look like I got cunt written on my head? Who do you think you are fucking with?
You know, I really like action flicks, t but...about 3/4 of the way through Crank 1, I turned it off and took it back. Just Godawful...reminded me of Transporter 2.
CRANK was stupid, but I'll watch Jason Statham in anything. LOVE. HIM. Why are they strapping cameras to him? With the sleeves and the straps, he looks like some sort of bondage pirate. Arrr.
@i4ni: I too have the ringtone.
