We've already circled January - March next year in our pink filofaxes as the Big Launch Period for the 3DS, but according to CVG it'll actually be going on sale this October—around the same time as Project Natal.
Nintendo's expected to formally announce it this June at E3, but CVG has heard from sources that it'll be hitting store shelves a good few months earlier than expected. An unnamed gaming publisher told them that "it's a surprise" but that "you don't launch a product that early to Christmas unless you're confident in it - and going to spend a lot of money on it. We're reassured that Nintendo is going to give it some decent backing in Q4."
Decent backing in the form of some must-have games, I hope. It's already been said that one of the early testers for the 3DS is the The Pokemon Company, which as the name suggests has worked on all of the Pokemon games. CVG is also reporting that Level 5, which was behind the Studio Ghibli-like Professor Layton, is also working on a custom 3D game for the new portable player. [CVG via TechRadar]
