Funny or Die’s The Occasional: The Very Model of a Modern Humor Magazine

You might have grown up reading MAD Magazine. Or maybe you didn’t, because you had a terrible and idiotic childhood. Regardless, today’s deluge of digital comedy content can’t really be contained in the same old magazine format. So here’s The Occasional, from Funny or Die.

What does it do?

The Occasional is a whole separate thing from Funny or Die’s main site. Yes, it’s largely made by the same folks, but it promises to use the digital magazine medium for interesting and original content, like games, or interactive Mitt Romney hair timelines/projections. And with room to stretch its legs beyond shortform video, it seems like The Occasional will dip into deeper textual sature than usual. Like a Rick Santorum-penned sex advice column, advising husbands to “Begin pumping until a baby is growing in her womb.”

Why do we like it?

It’s good comedy, from funny people. And more importantly, it’s a way, hopefully, for funny people to do funny and good things, and make a buck or two for it. Funny or Die’s always been about making that a reality for people on the internet, and hopefully this will be one more outlet for good stuff to be made. [Variety]
