6 Horror Movies Americans Pay to Rent Are Free Abroad This Halloween: Here Is the VPN Route

Six horror films that cost US viewers a rental fee or a paid subscription are streaming for free this week on public broadcasters in the UK and Australia, and a VPN with servers in those countries is the only thing standing between you and them.

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, a full weekend of movie nights. The American streaming map is scattered: one film sits on a paid tier, another is a rental, a third rotates off your service the week you want it. BBC iPlayer, ITVX and SBS On Demand have each built a free Halloween collection for anyone connecting from inside their borders. Here are the six titles worth the detour, and the honest version of what a VPN can and cannot do once you get there.

What BBC iPlayer Is Streaming for Halloween 2026

The BBC’s Halloween collection went live in early October and holds the strongest trio. Longlegs (2024), the Nicolas Cage serial-killer film that took roughly $71 million at the US box office, is here in full. So is Get Out (2017), Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning debut, and His House (2020), a refugee ghost story that still holds a perfect critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes after leaving Netflix.

iPlayer asks for a free BBC account with a UK postcode, and its terms say the service is intended for UK residents who hold a TV licence. Worth knowing before you sign up.

Australia’s public broadcaster added two of the best recent horror films on the same day. Talk to Me (2023), the A24 breakout about teenagers passing around an embalmed hand, was shot in Adelaide and is now free on home soil. Late Night With the Devil (2024) is almost too on the nose for this weekend: the whole film takes place during a live talk-show broadcast on Halloween night, 1977. Hellraiser and The Grudge followed on October 9. SBS is ad-supported, with a free account tied to an Australian postcode and no payment step.

What ITVX Keeps in Its Free Horror Library

ITV’s streaming service rounds out the six with An American Werewolf in London (1981), John Landis’s horror comedy that still owns the best transformation scene in the genre. ITVX runs on the same model as SBS: free with ads, free account, UK postcode at sign-up. It Follows and The Babadook share the shelf at the time of writing, though catalogues on all three broadcasters rotate monthly and nothing here is guaranteed past November.

How the VPN Route Works, Step by Step

Each broadcaster checks the IP address requesting the stream. A UK IP opens iPlayer and ITVX, an Australian IP opens SBS. A VPN swaps your US IP for one in the country you pick. The process is the same on every device: install the app, choose a UK or Australian server, open the broadcaster’s site, create the free account, press play. If a stream refuses to load, switch to another server in the same country; broadcasters block individual IPs, not whole providers.

None of the three verifies residency at sign-up, but reaching a service outside its licensed territory is against the terms of all of them. That call is yours; this guide explains the mechanism, nothing more.

Where a VPN Actually Fits, and Where It Doesn’t

A VPN changes the country your connection appears to come from, and that is enough for geo-blocked public broadcasters. It does not create a UK TV licence, does not stop the BBC from tightening its checks next month, and does not guarantee a given server stays unblocked through Saturday night. It will not make a paid US service free, and it will not speed up a slow connection: encryption adds a small overhead, invisible on fiber, noticeable on weak hotel Wi-Fi.

Where NordVPN Fits

For this job, three things matter: server depth in the UK and Australia, streaming speed, and a refund if the servers you land on are blocked. Our NordVPN review covers all three, including how the NordLynx protocol held up in speed tests, and NordVPN tops our best VPN ranking largely on streaming consistency. Every plan includes the full network; the pricier tiers add Threat Protection Pro and Dark Web Monitor, which have nothing to do with streaming.

NordVPN Basic at $3.49 per Month

NordVPN Basic runs $3.49 per month on the two-year plan, billed as $94.23 up front for 27 months (24 plus three free), 69 percent off the monthly rate. It renews at $139.08 per year after the first term. Basic covers everything in this guide: the UK and Australian servers, NordLynx, and up to ten devices. Advanced and Ultra only add the security extras above.

The 30-day money-back guarantee is the safety net. If iPlayer or SBS refuses every server you try before Saturday, you contact support through the 24/7 chat and the refund lands in five to ten business days. The current deal is here, and it is worth setting up today so the account step is done before the movie starts.
