Why ITVX Shows a Black Screen in the US

ITV is a free-to-air broadcaster paid for by advertising. Its main channels are ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, and ITV Quiz. ITVX replaced the old ITV Hub app. It streams those channels live, along with an on-demand library and a set of channels that exist only online.

ITV licenses many of its shows country by country, so ITVX streams only in the UK, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. On top of that, it checks your IP address to see where you’re connecting from.

What Postcode to Use for ITVX

ITVX requires a UK postcode at sign-up. ITV uses it to set your region, so you see the right local news, weather, and ITV1 schedule, and also to choose the ads you see. A US ZIP code doesn’t fit the format, which is a common reason the form says the postcode is wrong.

A UK postcode has two parts, separated by a space:

• The first part has two to four characters. It starts with one or two letters, followed by a number, and sometimes one more letter or number.
• The second part always has three characters: one number followed by two letters.

If ITVX still won’t accept it, check for these slips:

• Only the first half of the postcode was entered
• The letter O was typed in place of a zero, or the other way around
• Extra punctuation or a US ZIP code ended up in the field

Also, avoid a postcode from Scotland. Most of Scotland is served by STV, a separate broadcaster, so ITVX hides most ITV1 shows from accounts registered there. A postcode from England or Wales unlocks the full ITV1 schedule.

If you’ve already signed up with the wrong one, you can change it under the location settings in your ITVX account.

Do You Need ITVX Premium?

Most of ITVX is free: the free version covers live channels and most of the on-demand library, with ad breaks, and it doesn’t require a payment card. ITVX Premium costs about £6 a month.

It removes ads from on-demand shows, adds the BritBox catalog of older British series, and lets you download episodes on a phone. Live TV still shows ads, even on Premium. The free version is enough for most viewers.

Watching ITVX on a US TV, Phone, or Streaming Stick

The ITVX app is built for UK app stores, so it may not appear when you search a US store. In that case, a browser is the simplest fallback: with the VPN connected, sign in at itv.com on a laptop or phone. On a TV, the options depend on the device:

• Fire TV Stick and Android TV: install the VPN app first, then ITVX. On a Fire TV Stick with a VPN, the ITVX app may appear only after you set the Amazon account’s country to the UK.

Still, these services cover only a handful of shows. Live ITV1, the rest of the ITVX library, and newer dramas require a UK connection, like most other British TV in the US.

ITVX Not Working With a VPN? Try These Fixes

ITVX blocks even the best VPNs now and then, so if a black screen appears with the VPN on, one of these usually solves it:

• Switch servers. ITVX blocks some VPN servers, so another server or another UK city often works.
• Open a private window. ITVX can remember your actual location from cookies saved on an earlier visit.
• Pause ad blocking. ITVX may not start a video when it detects an ad blocker, including the ones built into VPN apps.

Can a Free VPN Unblock ITVX?

Not in our tests. The free versions of Windscribe and PrivadoVPN, the two free VPNs we tested with UK servers, couldn’t unblock ITVX. Proton VPN’s free plan has no British locations, so it can’t help here.
