British TV in the US Without a VPN
Two US streaming services specialize in British shows, and neither requires a VPN in the US:
- BritBox: the Standard plan costs $10.99 a month or $109.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial. Premier costs $149.99 a year and adds 4K, four screens, downloads, early releases, and BBC Select documentaries.
- Acorn TV: $9.99 a month after a 7-day free trial.
On regular US TV, BBC America and PBS’s Masterpiece strand air British drama. These air selected shows. Live BBC One, ITV1 and Channel 4 broadcasts stream only on the UK services.

NordVPN unblocked BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5 and NOW on its UK servers, including their live channels. The UK connection measured 184.73 Mbps, 3.0% below our baseline. NordVPN also offers Smart DNS for TVs without VPN apps, and its browser extension with location spoofing is the fallback when a site detects the app.

Proton VPN unblocked ITVX live and on demand on this retest, after ITVX had blocked it in an earlier round. BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 and NOW played normally on it. My5 was the exception: on-demand episodes played, and the Live TV tab showed a black screen on London UK#723.
Its London server measured 178.89 Mbps, 6.0% under our baseline. Proton VPN has no Smart DNS, so a TV without a VPN app can’t use it. Two years of VPN Plus cost $71.76, or $2.99 a month, and the $83.88 yearly renewal undercuts ExpressVPN’s $99.95 and NordVPN’s $139.08.

Fixing a Blocked UK Channel
Try a different UK server first. If the error persists, delete the site’s cookies and try these:
- Use a browser extension. The NordVPN and ExpressVPN extensions with location spoofing unblocked every service we tried in our streaming round.
- Change VPN for My5 live channels. Proton VPN showed a black screen there, while NordVPN and ExpressVPN played them.
