UK TV Abroad: Watch BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and More in 2026

If you’ve moved abroad from the UK, you probably know which programs you miss most. BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4 check where you’re connecting from, and outside the UK they show a region message or a black screen instead of your shows. Paid subscriptions don’t help much in Europe either.

Since Brexit, the EU rule that let subscribers take streaming services across borders no longer covers UK accounts. What Blocks UK TV Outside Britain

British broadcasters buy most of their programs for UK viewers only, so their apps check your IP address before every stream. From abroad, BBC iPlayer shows a region message, ITVX loads a black screen, and Channel 4 blocks its live channels.

A virtual private network solves the location check. It encrypts your traffic and sends it through a server in another country. Changing your IP address to a British one makes UK apps treat you as a local viewer.

Connecting to UK TV With a VPN

Choose a server in Britain, then sign in to the channel’s app or website. Any VPN with UK servers can provide a British IP address, but the streaming services block many of them. Most UK apps also require a free account with a UK postcode, and a valid postcode from any UK town works.

If an app was open before you connected, close it and reopen it. In a browser, clear cookies first. Cookies saved before you connected can reveal your location. BBC iPlayer played live and on demand on three UK servers for each of NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN.

Most British TV streams for free once you have a UK IP address. Here’s what each service offers and what signing up requires:

Channel 5’s app was called My5 until March 2025, when it became 5, and U replaced UKTV Play in July 2024.

TV License and Sign-Up Rules Abroad

BBC iPlayer requires a TV license for all its programs, live or on demand, and the rule still applies abroad. The license costs £180 a year from April 2026. Before you watch, iPlayer asks whether you have one. Once we confirmed it, every live channel and on-demand show played.

There’s no proof step, so it’s up to you to have a valid license. ITVX, Channel 4, 5, and U don’t require a license for on-demand shows, and neither does S4C, the Welsh-language channel. Each one asks you to sign up for a free account.

2. Proton VPN: Best for the Most UK Cities

Proton VPN covers the most UK cities of these three VPNs, with 849 servers in six cities, from London and Glasgow to Belfast and Cardiff. Its UK server came in at 178.89 Mbps, a 6.0% speed loss, and it unblocked iPlayer on three servers along with ITVX, Channel 4, U, and NOW. The 5 app was the exception: on-demand shows played, but the live channels showed a black screen. Watch 5’s programs on demand, or use NordVPN or ExpressVPN for the live channels. 3. ExpressVPN: Best for Quick Setup on Every Device

ExpressVPN had the highest UK speed of these three, at 185.74 Mbps, a 2.4% speed loss, and it connects in a second or two. It unblocked iPlayer on its London, Manchester, and Tottenham servers, and 5 played live and on demand. Its seven UK locations are mostly around London, with Manchester and the Midlands as alternatives.

ITVX detected it a few times during our tests. When that happened, ExpressVPN’s browser extension, with location spoofing enabled, unblocked ITVX. Two years of the Basic plan, plus four bonus months, cost $83.72, and the plan covers 10 devices. Its apps have few customization settings. Can You Watch UK TV Abroad With a Free VPN?

Yes, for iPlayer and Channel 4, for a few hours a month. Windscribe and PrivadoVPN unblocked both services on their free London servers. ITVX was blocked on every free VPN we tried, Hide.me’s free UK server showed iPlayer’s region message, and Proton VPN’s free plan has no UK server. The bigger limit is data.

Windscribe and PrivadoVPN cap free accounts at 10 GB a month, and Windscribe’s allowance requires a confirmed email. That lasted about five hours of HD streaming in our tests. Watching UK TV on a Smart TV or Fire TV Stick

NordVPN, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN have apps for Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV, so on those devices the steps are the same as on a phone. Samsung and LG TVs don’t support VPN apps, and you have two ways around that:

Sky, NOW, and Other Paid UK Services

TNT Sports moved to HBO Max in the UK on March 26, 2026, as a £30.99-a-month add-on. Like NOW, it requires a UK payment method and a UK IP address.

Official Ways to Watch UK TV Without a VPN

A few British shows are officially available abroad. These work without changing your location:

• Downloads: iPlayer downloads made in the UK are covered by your TV license, ITVX Premium downloads play abroad for up to 7 days, and NOW downloads also work abroad.
• BritBox International: BBC and ITV shows in the US, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
• BBC.com in the US: $8.99 a month, including the BBC News livestream.
• Acorn TV: British dramas and mysteries, available in the US and several other countries.

UK TV for British Expats

Expats face the same blocks as travelers. In Spain, satellite reception of UK channels depends on the region and requires a large dish, and unlicensed IPTV services are illegal there. Fixes for Common UK TV Errors

• ITVX shows a black screen: ITVX detected the VPN. Switch to another UK server, clear cookies, or use your VPN’s browser extension.
• ITV1 redirects to STV Player: ITVX sent us to STV Player on several UK servers, and STV Player played normally. STV shows most ITV programs.
• iPlayer still shows the region message: Clear cookies and cache, then reload the page.
• UK apps are missing from your app store: They appear only in UK app stores. Use the website, or change your store account’s region.
• The phone app ignores the VPN: Remove the app’s permission to use your location.

Is It Legal to Watch UK TV Abroad?

Using a VPN is legal in the UK and in most countries, and our guide to whether VPNs are legal lists the exceptions. Watching UK channels from abroad can break the broadcasters’ terms of service, and their usual response is to block the stream. The TV license rule still applies to iPlayer, though. Pay for one if you watch BBC programs.

Final Thoughts

British TV doesn’t have to stop after a move abroad. It takes a UK IP address from one of the best VPNs and a free account on each app. After that, iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, 5, U, and STV Player work much as they do at home. iPlayer also requires a TV license. Paid services are the harder part, because NOW and Sky Go work only with a UK subscription.

If you only follow a few British dramas, BritBox International or Acorn TV may cover them officially where they’re available. Live channels are mostly missing from those services, though.
