All 45 episodes of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, including its Christmas special, are now available on Netflix. The cult show, starring Paul Reubens as a mischievous man-child perpetually clad in an ill-fitting grey suit, is possibly the most bizarre children’s program to air on network television, and definitely one of the best.

The show mixes puppetry, stop-motion, Golden Age cartoons, screaming, a disembodied genie head, and the compositions of Mark Mothersbaugh. Lawrence Fishburn plays a cowboy. Phil Hartman plays a cranky sea captain. It is very good.

Pee-Wee’s Playhouse is a celebration of diversity, differences, weirdos, and make-believe. The show originally ran from 1986-1990, but watching it today, it doesn’t seem dated at all. If anything, it feels strikingly modern manic masterpiece. [Netflix]
