Apple Delays International iPad Launch by One Month

Citing "surprisingly strong US demand," Apple has delayed the international launch of the iPad by one month (preorders/pricing postponed to May). Huh, is a pile of 500,000 iPads really more than Apple expected to sell by this point?

CUPERTINO, Calif., April 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ —

Apple today released the following statement:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason-the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

Haha, very choice words. I recall them predicting 700,000 on the first day and over a million in the first week. There were more than enough left over by the time stores closed on the first day.

I think Apple is fearing it will be an international Flop. It's much harder for Apple to control the media in other countries, which means there will be much less hype and a lot less people waiting in line to get the Giant iPod thingy. If news spreads that the iPad is a failure in every country but the US, criticisms might cause US buyers to decline.

I don't recall the launch date, but they may also be waiting for OS4 to come out, considering that OS4 fixes many fatal flaws in the current iPad. Once again, big shoutout for all you iPad Beta testers.
