I spent my first 18 years in Australia, so know all too well how harsh the sun can be there—and how an app such as SunSmart could stop the slew of lobster-faces walking around in summer.

The app comes from the Australian Cancer Council, sick of seeing over 1,850 people dying of skin cancer every year. It's free, and uses the GPS to provide daily weather forecasts, but more importantly the UV levels which is what causes skin cancer. Temperature and sun protection times are also included, so users can be aware of the safest time to leave the house.

I'm not suggesting Aussies should be prisoners of the sun, but a little free intelligence on the UV levels can go a long way in preserving their health. [iTunes via Recombu]
