Sure, CGI is responsible for making us all visually cynical. But it’s also enabled projects like this one: a weird—and weirdly poetic—ode to the Pontiac by digital artist Chris LaBrooy.
According to U.K.-based LaBrooy, the project was a meditation on a walk through Brooklyn in the late afternoon—though to me, the angle of the light and the flavor of the cars looks more like Michigan. Either way, these are entirely artificial scenes; both the wildly twisted and intertwined car bodies and the housing developments in the background are made of nothing but 1s and 0s.
Is the series designed to serve as a latent analogy or some complex metaphor for the protracted death of the auto industry? Nah. This is fun for fun’s sake, right down to the title—Auto Aerobics–and LaBrooy’s description of the project: “And roll….and stretch….and glide…..and flex.” [Chris LaBrooy; Ignant]
