At last weekend’s MondoCon 4, Mondo’s annual poster and art convention held in Austin, Texas, the team behind the scenes revealed several projects they attempted to do, but couldn’t for a variety of reasons. For some, they couldn’t get approvals, and others just fell through. However, almost all of them are incredibly awesome, and you’re about to be super disappointed that you can’t get your hands on them.
Below we have them in a gallery, with explaination of why each one didn’t make it.
The Moon Night and Ghost Rider pins by Tom Whalen were released, but they canceled this Morbius because they didn’t think it worked.
This is an early sketch of a pint glass by Eric Powell. Fox said it was too angry.
Powell didn’t appreciate that so he sent this back.
This was the one released.

Becky Cloonan was asked to do a pint glass for Wonder Woman. This was her initial sketch, which the studio didn’t like.
Here was the next iteration. Again, they didn’t like it.
Her third sketch became this, which got much further in the process, but eventually someone said she should be smiling. And at that point, they just dropped it.
Artist Jason Edmiston did several portaits of Batman 1966 villains but they weren’t very popular. So this one of the Penguin was cancelled.

Randy Ortiz did several versions of a poster for Black Sunday. But actress Barbara Steele didn’t like how she looked. So they kept trying.
Eventually, she settled on this. But then, she never returned the final email, so the poster never got made.
Daniel Danger did this poster for Doctor Strange. But, since it’s not established that Dormamu has a body, and Danger used a toy as the body in this concept, it was rejected.
Florian Bertimer did this Doctor Strange poster and it got very far in the process. But, eventually, Marvel said they didn’t like the pose and that it had nothing to do with the movie. So it was cancelled.

Here’s both versions of the poster.
Concept of a Doctor Strange poster by Tomer Hanuka. Marvel rejected it because they said he looked like an “alien giraffe.”
Sam Wolfe Connelly did several concepts for a Hannibal poster and it just never made it though.
More unapproved Hannibal posters.

The poster on the left, The Dark Knight by Rory Kurtz, was released. However, Mondo toyed with doing the Joker variant on the right, eventually deciding against it because it just wasn’t cool enough.
Martin Ansin did this art for Stranger Things over a weekend. A weekend! ...
...It was going to be used for a Mondo cassette tape. But the project just never happened so the art went away. However, it was used to promote the show in another medium.
MondoCon 4 just ended, but head to the company’s site for more information about the event and to keep an eye out for next year. If you love posters, art, games, toys, and all that kind of cool, collectible stuff, it’s worth the trip.
