Choosing the first option is simpler, as you permit an AI to build a website for you. The caveat is that the result depends on the answers you provide to the AI, which it uses for this purpose. You can start with a template, which we prefer, as Wix offers over 900 and all are free!

Having tested both options, we found that Wix is great for designing online stores thanks to hundreds of bespoke templates. We’ll admit we used its ADI tool quite a few times, allowing Wix to forge an online store, and we must say, the results were 90% “there”. Impressive!
Etsy’s simplicity is one thing we liked in our evaluation. When you sign up, Etsy will right away allow you to create a listing and start adding your products. As this isn’t a “classic” website builder, don’t expect templates, AI tools, and other fancy tools found in Wix.

Instead, everything revolves around selling, so the initial task will be to pump out as many products as you can, add prices, set photos, include descriptions, etc. A very irritating thing is the lack of bulk uploads, so you need to add products one by one — my goodness!
Both options are easy-going and beginner-friendly. Wix is a bit simpler to start with because of its ADI tool and the option to upload bulk products for a faster start-up. Etsy is truly fantastic but with no bulk uploads, you’ll spend hours populating your store before you can start.

Our claim that Wix beats Etsy in the design aspect will be bolstered in this round. After all, Wix is a website builder, which also supports e-commerce businesses. Etsy is a digital marketplace whose sole purpose is to endorse selling, with little to no design “touch”.

Wix’s customization allows you to change fonts, alter the structure of the site, and customize the mobile version of your website. The downside is that, once you publish the website, you can’t switch the template. Nothing is saved, so you have to start from scratch every time.
However, this is compensated by Wix’s vast design leeway and advanced AI tools. For example, we love Wix Velo, which allows coders to craft custom code and extend the website’s functionalities or even create responsive designs like those from Webflow.

Etsy’s Design Philosophy
Let’s clarify again that Etsy is NOT a website builder, so expecting ready-made templates is a bit crazy. No, you get no templates, which can be seen in every Etsy online store. They look virtually the same, with some differences in fonts, styles, colors, and other “minor” stuff.
We won’t say Etsy online stores look bad. They don’t lack substance but are very basic.

After you populate your store, you can customize the featured photo at the top. Then, you can change the font from a selected few and color-adjust the store to look as you want. Etsy Plus members can highlight their best products to drive sales to them, which is nice.
In the end, the lack of design freedom makes every Etsy online store identical.
Yes, fonts and colors are different and that’s somewhat fine. However, you can’t help but notice that each store shares the same soul. It’s like getting a new iPhone each year — they’ve been looking like each other for years at this point.
This round goes to Wix and our decision is as objective as possible. We appreciate Etsy’s simplicity but Wix is a heavy hitter. Its customization freedom, 900+ free templates, and countless AI tools make it far more capable of designing unique online stores.

Adding products is pretty simple, plus, with its AI tools, you can generate descriptions and include images. From here, you can also track your inventory, set up custom shipping (per weight, location, etc.), and include coupons for discounts to drive more sales.
Wix also supports customer accounts, so each can make an account on your website, leave reviews, and communicate with you more efficiently. Despite desperately trying to poke holes in Wix’s story, we couldn’t find any. It’s an all-encompassing online shop solution.
Selling Online With Etsy
Etsy is surprisingly capable, whether you use the free or the “Plus” version. Some of our favorite features include:

Etsy handles inventory tracking fairly well, allowing you to keep track of sold and restocked items without hassle. The process is pretty much automatic, which is great for ease of use. During our Etsy vs Wix comparison, we discovered that the former supports custom orders.

Custom orders are managed efficiently through Etsy, as you communicate with the customer on personalization and necessary details. This is complemented by customizable shipping and comprehensive sales analytics, which gives a broad overview of your store’s performance.
Shipping
Shipping is an integral part of online sales and both options offer many great features.
However, Wix is a bit more customizable. You can handle shipping yourself or leave it to professionals like UPS, FedEx, USPS, and other carriers. Wix perfectly integrates with them, allowing for automatic shipping rate calculation, which customers always seem to appreciate.
In Wix, you can also tweak your shipping rates based on the product price, weight, or location. Flat shipping fees are also there and you can immediately print shipping labels from the dashboard so that you can manage and track the sent product in real-time.
Etsy is almost identical here, with printable shipping labels and support for various popular carriers. It enables you to buy shipping labels from them, as well, which is pretty nice. Once the label is bought, it’s marked as shipped by the carrier and is ready for delivery.
Payment Methods
In terms of payment methods, Wix offers two options; Wix Payments or integration with 70+ payment vendors.
Etsy offers an in-house vendor called Etsy Payments, with dozens but not as many gateways.
We prefer Wix because, again, you get to choose. If you don’t want Wix Payments, use only the payment vendors you need like Apple Pay, PayPal, credit cards, etc. If not, use Wix Payments and let it handle everything with very low fees of 2.9% + $0.30.
Etsy Payments endorses all the “essential” payment vendors, such as PayPal, iDEAL, Sofort, debit and credit cards, and proprietary Etsy credits. However, its transaction fees are HUGE, as the platform takes 6.5% of the displayed price for each product. We noticed that Squarespace has much lower fees even in the cheapest plan.
Wix is a better, more robust solution for selling online. Etsy is intuitive and offers an array of sales tools. Ultimately, it’s let down by the lack of customization, extremely high transaction fees, and subpar scalability, which won’t bode well for rapidly growing businesses.

The free version of email marketing lets you send 5,000 emails monthly. If this isn’t enough, its social media integrations allow you to effortlessly share products on Instagram, Facebook, and other marketplaces.
What Does Etsy Offer?
Etsy’s SEO tools are very limited in comparison. They’re essentially constrained to the basics like descriptions, tags, alt titles, and things like that. However, Etsy has its own search engine, and in-house SEO tools are more designed for it, rather than Google, as is the case in Wix.
On the marketing side, Etsy relies on ads, which help promote the product in the search results. Again, we’re talking about search results on Etsy. Social media integrations are present, at least, so sharing product updates and discounts is a no-brainer for most sellers.
Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook are great places, depending on what kind of product you’re selling. Etsy unfortunately lacks any semblance of email marketing and advanced SEO metrics you’ll find in Wix. This is by design, which is more “self-centric” and “closed” compared to its rival.
After examining Wix vs Etsy, we concluded that Wix is a far better option for SEO and marketing. Wix’s capabilities can further be expanded through its App Store, allowing for a significant SEO boost and more sales through email marketing and social media integrations.

Initiating an online store is rarely free but it doesn’t have to be costly. Etsy and Wix prove this by offering budget-friendly plans with all of the features we mentioned so far.
Wix starts at $20/mo for the Core plan – the Light plan at $10/mo doesn’t have e-commerce tools.

All Wix’s plans include a free domain for a year, with 50 GB to unlimited storage. You can also include 5 to 15 collaborators, which is great for larger online shops and demand for more personnel. The Business plan at $29/mo is the best option and is recommended by Wix.
Keep in mind that besides these prices, you’ll also need a domain after the first year, which, if you pick “.com”, usually costs $15 annually. Some apps from Wix’s App Store are also premium, so if you need additional capabilities, you’ll spend at least a few monthly quids.
For one of the best website builders, Wix is very affordable but then, Etsy is a bit different.

Its upfront costs are less pronounced, except for the start-up, one-time fee of $15. For example, you can sell for free or get the Plus plan at $10/mo. Etsy is more of a pay-as-you-go platform, charging you $0.20 per listing and taking transaction/processing fees.
