Metal fans in Botswana have cultivated a fashion sense that wouldn't be entirely out of place in your favorite 1980s Mad Max knock-off. Kalahari metalheads combine a cowboy aesthetic with lots of leather for an idiosyncratic, end-times-warrior look.
Photographer Frank Marshall has been shooting Botswana's metal scene for his upcoming Visions of Renegades show in Johannesburg. Batswana metal fans draw inspiration from such icons as Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister and are always looking to one-up each other in leather-clad badassitude. Notes Marshall:
The costumes are like an arms race amongst the scene members [...] There's a competition between them to see who can look the most brutal. When I was in Botswana, I was carrying around a few of the previous metaller portraits I'd done. The locals admired the guys in them. But they also felt compelled to raise their sartorial games.
These two sharp-dressed men dub themselves "Dead Demon Rider" and "Maximum," a moniker I would totally go by if I had to have a single-word nickname. You can see more of Marshall's photography at Viceland, and here are some Batswana metal fans rocking the post-apocalyptic desperado look.
