Malcolm Navel, the protagonist of Nate Milton‘s short film Tank, is a young amateur naturalist with an impressive collection of critters. One day, after encountering a giant salamander, he discovers a mystical connection between one of his tanks and the world outside.
The hand-spun storybook look of the animation does a lot to capture Malcolm’s sense of awe, and helps us suspend our disbelief at the relationship between the salamander tank and the larger world. Milton crowdfunded this short through a successful Kickstarter campaign, and has posted some of the production work on Tumblr.
