The breakout success of Obsession is one of the big pop-culture headlines of 2026, and the young writer-director behind the phenomenon, Curry Barker, is still adjusting to his newfound status as a power player. While he’s talked about Obsession‘s franchise potential now that the movie is a huge hit, he’s now teasing his idea for its sequel… sort of.
In a new Hollywood Reporter interview checking in with the rising star, Barker said that he’s still figuring out what to work on next. His first post-Obsession movie, Anything but Ghosts, is currently in post-production. But what about after that, now that Barker is one of the most in-demand talents in Hollywood? Will it be his recently announced crack at reviving The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise? Or will it be the as-yet-unknown movie an unnamed studio offered him $10 million to make?
The short answer is, he’s still deciding. “The big conversation is: Do I want to do an IP movie? Or do I want to do my original?” Barker told THR. “I have an idea for my original, but I have so many ideas for Chainsaw as well. I have a lot to weigh, and that’s where the stress really comes from. I don’t know what to do next.”
Asked if there’s something he’s certain he won’t do next, Barker said he’s not planning on rushing into the sequel to his current mega-hit. But he does want to do it eventually. “I don’t want to go straight into Obsession 2. I have such a cool idea for it that I won’t say,” he told THR. “I’m not saying it has to be five, six years from now. But I think people would be just as excited for it if it came a little down the road. It’s a whirlwind, and I’m trying to figure it out.”
