With Obsession literally making history at the box office, fans are obviously wondering about what’s next. Next for the characters in that movie and next for its writer-director, Curry Barker. Well, it seems those answers are going to be revealed at the exact same time in Barker’s next film.
That film is called Anything But Ghosts, and it follows two fake ghost hunters who end up encountering real ghosts. “To me, [Anything But Ghosts] lives in the same world [as Obsession],” Barker told io9 recently. “You could put these two movies side by side and go, ‘Yeah, like, they probably live [together]. The tone isn’t going to be a crazy shift, but I will say that it’s very different than Obsession in the aspect of like, the premise itself lends itself well to comedy.”
Within that tonal connection will, apparently, also be some literal connection too. But, to explain, we have to spoil the ending of Obsession.

At the end of Obsession, Nikki has already killed her friends Sarah (Megan Lawless) and Ian (Cooper Tomlinson) when Bear (Michael Johnston) kills himself. His death releases Nikki from the powers of the One Wish Willow, basically making her herself again. But it seems she will immediately have to deal with the consequences.
Speaking at a Q&A reported on by Deadline, Barker explained that “there’s like a news article thing on the next movie where you hear a news anchor talking about a triple homicide [by] a woman.”
That means a few things. One, Anything But Ghosts takes place in the same universe as Obsession. Which Curry certainly hinted at in our interview. Also, it means Nikki was blamed for the deaths of Sarah, Ian, and Bear. Which does make sense from an outsider’s perspective. How else would you describe it logically, right? There is no logic behind it all.
The question then becomes, though, what is Nikki doing? She’s being blamed for the murders, but have they captured her? Is she on the run? Is she in custody? What’s next for her? Odds are, we won’t ever find out. But it’s definitely interesting that Barker has chosen to give fans this little nugget, not just in his upcoming movie, but beforehand.
