There’s been a lot going on in Big Two comics over the years, and one quietly ongoing thread concerns Static. (Don’t add the “Shock.”) The fan-favorite, electrically powered hero has come back in fits and starts throughout the 2020s, usually with the rest of the Milestone Universe following him. For this next attempt, DC’s trying to be less ambitious and just put Virgil Hawkins where he’d best make an impact.
Apparently, that’s in the pages of Tate Brombal and Sami Basri’s New Titans. The publisher’s August 2026 solicitations reveal Static’s joining the team with issue 38, joining the team’s current lineup that includes Nightwing, Terra, Batgirl (Stephanie Brown), and Wonder Girl (Yara Flor). It seems he’s coming at just the right time, as the team’s going to the Amazon rainforest for its first real outing as a team. Whatever’s going down, Static will play a big part in the events to come.
Before this, Static had popped back into the DC spotlight recently with a Batman Beyond crossover book, plus the Dakota Incident one-shot to New History of the DC Universe and a DC K.O. tie-in that put him alongside some of his future teammates. Dakota co-writer Joseph P. Illidge said Static’s in “Act Two” of his comeback, so there’s clearly an intent here to make sure Virgil sticks around for longer than a few months. But ask any Static fan, and they’ll tell you we’ve been here before, so we’ll wait and see if this charge truly holds.
New Titans #38 releases August 19, with Static getting a small four-page prelude to further set him up in July’s New Titans #37.
