Medgadget reports on a recent award given to Conceptus for their Essure permanent birth control system. An Essure mico-insert is placed at the opening of the fallopian tube. It expands and anchors itself and soon, a tissue in-growth begins growing around the device, effectively closing off the tube entirely. The effectiveness of the device in clinical trials topped out at around 99.80% over three years, where apparently only the most intrepid sperm made it through. The Essure method stands out as being the only sterilization method requiring no incisions and leaving no scars. Still, it’s not reversible (to my knowledge) so that’s definitely something to consider if your biological clock is still ticking. And, of course, you’re female.

Update: Yes, we know that only the most powerful, dedicated super-sperm ever get a fallopian tube, we’re just happy that Chris the Intern knew women had them at all.
