Behold the very first look at Tom Hiddleston in the movie adaptation of J.G. Ballard's High Rise. But is this before or after everyone inside this fabulous luxury building has gone completely insane?

Thanks to Empire, we now have the first look at director Ben Wheatley's High Rise adaptation. According to Empire, Hiddleston is playing the anti-hero Dr Robert Laing. And yes, even Hiddleston will be giving into his more "animalistic impulses," eventually "turning the building into a bacchanalian den of iniquity." Oh man, it's time to re-read High Rise.

The book is centered around a gigantic (and totally isolated from society) high rise building. Inside this skyscraper is a whole slew of people, shops, condos, pool, basically anything you want, at least if you live in the right part of the building and you have the means. But beneath the shiny exterior of the high rise a class war is brewing, and eventually a very, very, very bloody fight breaks out between the upper, middle and lower levels of residents. This book is DARK and violent. And the movie aims to keep it that way AND it's also going to keep it set in the '70s! In our last interview with Wheatley, he revealed that his adaptation will be set in 1975:

Yeah, well, I mean it's going to look like the '70s. It's going to be very styled in that way. We're looking at the Ridley Scott adverts of that period. It's going to be modern in a way that the '70s looked. In a way that, "I don't know what the future looks like anymore," which is quite funny. We're already in Buck Rogers land now. Aren't we? We've all got phones, it's not that exciting. But back then they had a real idea of what the future was going to be like, and it was much more stylish.

I'm kind of embarrassed (acutely embarrassed, actually) to admit that I've never read one of Ballard's novels. Is this a good one to start with? I always thought I'd start with Empire of the Sun, but High Rise sounds interesting.
