Toshiba has announced a new LCD TV called the “RD-17V1,” and it’s allegedly the first “hybrid TV.” Though hybrid meant “half human, half machine, ALL KILLER” in the glory days of low-rent sci-fi, today it has come to mean “contains both DVD-R/RW and hard drive.” Despite having a squint-inducing 17-inch size, the RD-17V1 manages to cram 1280 x 768 worth of pixels on the display, so you can use it for HDTV and the like. Hell, it’s even equipped with an Analog RGB (D-Sub 15 pin) jack, so you can plug it directly into your PC. The 17V1 features everything you’d expect from an LCD TV these days, but it also features many capabilities common to modern Japanese hybrid recorders. If you decide a 17-inch LCD, HDTV, DVD recorder, and 160GB hard drive are worth about $1,500 USD, please feel free to fly to Japan and pick one of these up.
