Jamie Foxx wants to star in a Spawn movie for some reason

Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx will make his triumphant debut in the superhero movie genre as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But that's not enough, as the actor has announced he's trying his damnedest get a new Spawn movie off the ground, with himself in the starring role. For some reason.

Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has been talking about a Spawn sequel and/or relaunch pretty much non-stop since the first movie came out in 1997, but I think it's safe say Foxx has a tiny bit more clout that the Image Comics founder, and thus can actually make this movie happen, finally.

Foxx told that he was "aggressively pursuing" the roles of Spawn and of Mike Tyson, both of which I'm pretty sure no one else was pursing, aggressively or otherwise. So it's safe to say if Foxx manages to convince a studio to bankroll a Spawn reboot — and lord knows some studio will merely hear the word "superhero" and decide to pony up — then the role is his.

But I have to wonder whether a Spawn movie could survive in the 2010s. Spawn is a creature of the '90s as much as Watchmen is a product of the '80s, and we all know what a tough time Watchmen had (and it's safe to say Watchmen has a slightly higher pedigree than Spawn does). Do today's audiences want to see a dark and tortured anti-hero covered in spikes wearing a cape the size of a circus tent? Well, Jamie Foxx and Todd McFarlane do, so I guess that's two tickets sold.
