HBO's pilot for "provocative period drama" set during the Salem witch trials, The Devil You Know, has added a grip of new cast members as it rolls toward production this spring, including Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy). The actor shared her excitement yesterday:
Eddie Izzard stars in the latest project from the prolific Jenji Kohan (Orange Is the New Black, Weeds). Kohan is co-scripting the pilot with Bruce Miller (The 100, Eureka) and Tracy Miller. Along with Izzard, who plays "a rigidly Puritan patriarch," actors making the trip back in time to Ye Olde Paranoia Days mostly hail from the UK, including Damien Molony (Being Human, Ripper Street) and Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting).
Others announced yesterday were Ever Carradine, Julian Rhind Tutt, Matthew James Thomas, Nigel Lindsay, Hannah Nordberg, Naian Gonzalez Norvind, and Zawe Ashton, plus Will Pullen, Kate Nash, and Seana Kofoed. Nadia Alexander and Ismenia Mendes were previously announced, along with Izzard, earlier this month.
The series, Deadline reports, will explore "the circumstances around one of the most compelling chapters in American history — the infamous Salem Witch Trials in 17th century New England, where intolerance and repression set neighbor against neighbor and led a town to mass hysteria." (Presumably, it'll offer more true-to-life detail than Salem ...)
More info on the show will, presumably, filter out once the pilot begins filming, but news of The Devil You Know's progress suggests there's still a hunger for TV witches despite The Witches of East End (no doubt a VERY DIFFERENT kind of show than what HBO has planned, but still ...) being laid to rest.
