Kyocera kills the Kurv

By

Reading time 1 minute

About six months ago Kyocera was showing off a phone called the Kurv, which came with a digital camera, an MP3 player, a built-in FM radio, and most importantly, these swappable “Smart Skin” faceplates that included graphics, ringtones, and games in them. The idea was that you could easily custom the inside as well as the outside of your phone just by changing the faceplate. At the time we thought it wasn’t such a bad idea, but what we found amusing was Kyocera’s decision to introduce the Kurv to the public with a Smart Skin featuring Diane and Elaine Klimaszewski, those scantily-clad blonde twins from the Coors Light commercials. We poked a little fun at Kyocera for their choice, something which a couple of days later sparked an angry missive from Don McGuire, Kyocera’s Vice President for Global Marketing, who accused us of being “jaded.” Which of course we are, not that it matters or is anything to be ashamed of.

Anyway, the reason we launched into this long winded story is that the Kyocera Kurv is officially DOA (and we’d like to think our snottiness had NOTHING to do with it). Kyocera killed it before it ever made it to market, and now Wildseed, the company behind the Smart Skins, is suing them for breach of contract. We sure hope those blonde twins are called to testify at the trial.
