Microsoft Is Paying YouTubers for Positive Xbox One Coverage

Gary Cutlack - Gizmodo UK

Microsoft has been outed by YouTube content generators, who claim the company has been offering to pay increased ad revenue to video producers who mention Xbox One in a positive light and include the relevant tag in their videos.

News of the pay-to-mention promotion came via the Machinima UK YouTube channel's Community Manager (who has since deleted his account in shame), which revealed its users could earn an extra $3 CPM (earnings per thousand views) as long as their video output included 30 seconds of Xbox One video and wasn't slagging the machine off. Plus, in a particular shady move, content generators are required not to talk about being in the scheme in order to get their bonuses.

The tweet outlined the basic details of the deal, but has since been deleted. But that's OK, as the terms and conditions have been stuck online for posterity. You're obviously supposed to keep quiet about weird behind-the-scenes pay rises in return for adjusting your opinion and earning some free money. [Ars]
