When you can’t innovate, replicate — and then demolish the competition you’ve copied from. Last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the Redmond Rumbler is in the process of making a Skype-style VoIP service for Microsoft-powered cellular phones included in the mobile Microsoft Office Communicator software to be released on a limited basis within the next 60 days. In addition to allowing VoIP communication, the mobile Office Communicator software will allow Wi-Fi connected phones to access e-mail, Office applications, and a “consistent real-time communications experience across PCs and smart mobile devices.”
Skype already offers a client for Wi-Fi enabled Pocket PCs, but with Microsoft itself jumping on the bandwagon now, some are saying that cellular service providers are going to feel some serious pressure to lower rate costs. Who’s complaining?
