For what seems like the 100th time, a Monopoly movie is about to pass Go. Lionsgate is the latest company to try and turn the popular board game into a movie and they’ve hired Andrew Niccol, creator of Gattaca and The Truman Show, to write it.
Hasbro has been trying to turn Monopoly into a movie for the better part of a decade. Back in 2008, they even had Ridley Scott attached to do a Blade Runner-inspired version of the film. (That’s not a joke.) Unfortunately, that fell apart and since then, a few other studios have taken a crack. Now it’s Lionsgate and Niccol, whose take seems to be the most logical one.
According to The Wrap, Monopoly will be about “a boy from Baltic Avenue who uses both Chance and Community in a quest to make his fortune, taking him on a fun, adventure-filled journey. Along the way he will have to make his own luck, while hoping to avoid going directly to jail.”
Wow, that sounds terrible. Not the idea of an adventure of a boy trying to make a fortune, but the incessant and forced Monopoly puns. Then again, even Niccol’s bad movies at least are centered on good ideas. And when he’s on, he’s capable of amazing things, like in the case of Truman Show and Gattaca. Hopefully Monopoly, if it even happens, will be more along those lines.
