While some recent Star Wars shows have unfortunately left dangling cliffhangers that are unlikely to be dealt with, the same won’t be said for Ahsoka. In a new interview, the show’s creator and Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni confirmed that the iconic Mortis Gods, who are teased at the end of season one, will play some role in season two.
“It’s definitely a thing,” Filoni told Empire magazine.
Season one of Ahsoka ended with Ahsoka and Sabine stranded on Peridea along with Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno). Skoll (who’ll now be played by Rory McCann) was there to explore some mysterious, ancient Force mysteries, and he was last seen among massive statues of the Mortis Gods, characters first introduced in The Clone Wars animated series as physical manifestations of the Force. Their existence basically turned ideas about the Force inside out, but they rarely get discussed.
Now, it’s important to note that Filoni’s quotes don’t confirm any of the Mortis Gods themselves—the Father, the Son, and the Daughter—will appear on screen as live-action characters. He is basically just confirming that the idea of them and their general existence is part of the season. Beyond that, who knows?
“What we’re dealing with is: are you going to believe in this, or not?” Filoni said. “And what is the danger if it’s real? And how are you going to prioritize your goals here? What would a Jedi do, versus what would a regular person do? Those things come up through the course of the season.”
That quote also alludes to something else Filoni seems to be exploring with this new season of Ahsoka. Whether or not Ahsoka, who famously defied and left the Jedi Order, is a Jedi or merely someone who uses the Force. To answer that, the Mortis Gods are apparently a crucial piece of the Star Wars puzzle. “It was so surprising when George [Lucas] created these archetype god characters,” Filoni said. “What were we examining there in Clone Wars? What was the metaphor? A lot of it is about power, and what you do with power, and how you wield power. For a Jedi, I think it’s a natural story path to get into these questions.”
“For a Jedi,” Filoni said. But is Ahsoka one? We’ll have much more on Ahsoka season two as we get closer to its January 20, 2027 release date.
