Severely Discounted Southwest Airfare Is Your Airplanes-Are-The-Biggest-Gadget Deal of the Day

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Airplanes are one of the physically largest gadgets, and the international system of air travel is a technological marvel. Gizmodo loves aviation—we cover the misadventures of the TSA, the long-overdue introduction of good WiFi on flights, and the Air Force's bizarre social media habits. Most of us can't buy an airplane (although we can dream) but we all take a flight at some point. Considering that poorly booked flights can cost you more than a new iPad, it's something you want to get a deal on. Normally Dealzmodo focuses on gadgets, silicon, and toys, but today a deal came through the wire that was too good to pass up.

Southwest's Big Winter Sale started today, and it's offering 40% off nationwide flights with the code BIGDEAL40. Of course, with airlines, there are some catches, but these are pretty toothless as far as restrictions go. The windows are Nov. 28 through Dec. 12, 2012, and Jan. 7 through Feb. 14, 2013, so a quick in-and-out for Christmas won't work, and there are some restricted airport pairs. But for the most part if you want to go somewhere over the next few months, you can save a whole lot if you book today through Southwest.

You've got a friend who you haven't seen in a while. Send this deal to her. Your college doesn't have class in January. Pick somewhere exciting and fly there. Your mother misses you. Go see your mother. [Southwest]
