Sony’s DRC-MFv2 Upscales Regular TV to HD

Today brings another interesting announcement from Sony, in the form of new video processing technology called “DRC-MFv2” (Digital Reality Creation: Multi-

Function V2). It can scale up conventional TV signals to full High-Definition – 1920 x 1080 pixels (you might know it as 1080i). Explaining just how the technology works would be difficult, because basically we are idiots, but the long and short of it revolves around interpolation of the

standard TV signal using the correlation of the relationship between… other words that end with “ation.” I’ll leave it to the well-paid Sony

translators to go into the technical end of things for you once the English press release comes out. It works somehow, let’s leave it at that until we can determine how well.

But hey, anything that makes TV look better will be nice. Other advantages of the technology include the ability to convert all other HDTV signals (480 and 720) to 1080i, as well as zoom functions. Look forward to seeing these new chips in Wega TVs and “other external devices” this year.
