It took a little more than 2 years and nearly 9 kilometers of driving, but NASA’s Curiosity Rover has finally reached the base of Mount Sharp.
The a 3.4-mile-tall mountain, formally known as Aeolis Mons, rises from the center of Gale Crater, and is the rover’s primary scientific target. After so much driving (for which the Curiosity team was criticized during a recent review), this is an exciting milestone.

“Curiosity now will begin a new chapter from an already outstanding introduction to the world,” said Jim Green, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division. “After a historic and innovative landing along with its successful science discoveries, the scientific sequel is upon us.”
