Netflix is losing a bunch of great movies next month, including classics like 12 Angry Men. That's fine; Netflix changes movie rosters all the time, and we're getting Mean Girls back in the new year. But before it goes away, I recommend watching the second-best teen comedy that came out in 2004: Saved!
Jena Malone stars as devoted born again Christian Mary, who decides to save her boyfriend from the throes of homosexuality by losing her virginity to him. She gets pregnant, he gets sent to a Pray-Away-the-Gay camp, and Mandy Moore kills it as the hypocritical villainess.
The movie has the sort of cheery bite as the first season of Weeds, which makes sense, since it was written by screenwriters who later went on to write the first seasons of Weeds. Mary-Louise Parker shows up here as Mary's full-of-shit mom, and Martin Donavan (who played Weeds' ill-fated DEA agent) is in Top Smarm Mode as an adulterous skateboarding missionary named Pastor Skip.
