For a minute, television series aftershows were all the rage. The Walking Dead popularized the format with The Talking Dead, which led to Breaking Bad‘s Talking Bad, Better Call Saul‘s Talking Saul, Game of Thrones‘ After the Thrones, Star Trek: Discovery‘s After the Trek… you get it. What all of these series have in common—besides a stunning lack of originality in their names that I’m certain their respective networks thought was trendy and referential rather than a grim indictment of the state of television as content and commodity—is that they all died out over a decade ago. These days, official post-show podcasts are de rigueur.
AMC, however, is going for another bite of the… neck, I guess?… with a televised aftershow for The Vampire Lestat, the upcoming third season of Interview With the Vampire. Writer and producer Lizzie Bassett will host The Vampire Lestat: After Dark, a half-hour chat show that will air each week on AMC+, with select episodes also airing on AMC.
After Dark will feature interviews with the vampire Lestat (Sam Reid), as well as other cast members, including Jacob Anderson, Eric Bogosian, Delainey Hayles, and Assad Zaman, along with creator Rolin Jones and executive producer Mark Johnson. And don’t worry if you’re too hooked on podcasts to go back: the show will also be available on podcast platforms in audio format.
The Vampire Lestat follows the cult success of Interview With the Vampire, which reinvented Anne Rice’s 1976 horror novel for a modern audience by taking the book’s subtextual queer themes and making them very much textual. It breathed new life (sorry) into a stale genre whose heyday seemed to have been a decade past. Maybe The Vampire Lestat: After Dark can do that for the aftershow genre too.
A special preview episode of The Vampire Lestat: After Dark will air on May 31. The Vampire Lestat premieres on June 7 on AMC.
