Fans of Doctor Who’s Victorian-era “Paternoster Gang”—Silurian and human couple Madame Vastra and Jenny, alongside their Sontaran butler Strax—have been clamoring for a spinoff since they first appeared. While that may not happen on TV, a new audio drama is the closest thing you’ll get to one anytime soon.
...that is, if you don’t mind it only being a third of the Paternoster Gang that’s tagging along for the ride. Big Finish, the company behind Doctor Who’s long running range of audio dramas, has announced that the Sontaran will be crossing over from the TV show to their own Victorian Who spinoff, Jago & Litefoot & Strax.
Fans of the classic series should recognize the names Henry Gordon Jago and George Litefoot, who were major supporting characters in the fondly-remembered 1977 Tom Baker story The Talons of Weng-Chiang. Original actors Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter have returned to reprise the roles for their own range of supernatural audio stories, currently in its tenth series.
It’s interesting to see now that Big Finish have got their hands on “NuWho” characters—something the line has strictly avoided doing for the past decade, featuring only classic-era Doctors and characters available for use—and how they’re integrating them into the Doctor Who stories they’ve been telling for nearly 20 years at this point. We’ve already got Kate Lethbridge-Stewart getting a UNIT series, and even River Song teaming up with the Eighth Doctor. Where next? Hopefully some full-cast dramas starring the 9th, 10th and 11th Doctors. It’s clearly what fans want, and every new tease of Big Finish’s projects is inching us a little closer to it!
