This sad gigantic building is the mighty Hangar One, one of the largest freestanding structures in the world. At a whopping 8 acres (32,000 square meters) it's also one of NASA's biggest buildings. It has seen better days.
Hangar One was built in the 30s as the station for the USS Macon, which was a flying aircraft carrier for the US Navy—it carried Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk biplane fighters on its belly. The iconic structure, which is one of the strangest structures at NASA's Ames Research Center in California, is now being renovated after several months of cleaning up all the asbestos materials that plagued the whole thing.
I can't wait for the renovation to be finished. Seeing it like this makes me a bit sad. In a "fuck it feels everything at NASA is going to hell" kind of way (even while it's really not. Or maybe it is, with the rest of the world).

Update: Actually, funding for the renovation has been cut. It seems that the building is not going to revisit its past glory and this is most probably the definitive state until someone can get some funds to do it. [Thanks reader Randy B Popp!]
