Wonderfully Surreal Photos From The American Museum Of Natural History

Earlier this week, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) launched its Digital Special Collections site — an online archive of more than 7,000 images that includes seldom-seen, scientific illustrations from the AMNH Rare Book Collection, and backstage glimpses of the museum’s famous dioramas.

Spanning the AMNH’s 145-year history, the images were previously available only at the museum’s fourth floor research library. And while many people will ooh and aah at the online maps, engravings and photos of expeditions, for me the most memorable images are the illusion-shattering, behind-the-scenes photos of the museum staff constructing the carefully designed tableaus that have enthralled millions of visitors.
