The strange saga of the XBox 360 seems to portend bad things for the gaming industry. The 360, while very cool, is pissing off people so much and making Japan yawn so much that folks are basically saying that the bloom is off the rose, lads, and the future will soon be gameless.
Do we agree? Naw. This set of consoles will have some nice, slow uptake. The games will be cool, we’ll play them for about four years, and then we’ll buy new consoles like good little babies. Essentially, however, the 360 seems to have dragged down the industry this season, leading Activision and EA to get a little whiny and investors to buck. Unfortunately, I think—and Ars Technica’s writer concurs—that it’s a severe lack of cool games that is bringing down the industry, not anything in the core business model. After all, I still can’t believe I played Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater for as long as I did, especially considering those crazy horses and all that garbage they stuffed into that turkey.
