Does it come as any surprise that a portrait photographer’s hobby would still be photography? Given that Levon Biss didn’t have room for an entire portrait studio at home, he turned to shooting insects in his spare time. But his macro setup, and skills have resulted in some of the most spectacular insect portraits you’ll ever see.
You’ve almost certainly seen macro portraits of insects before, but Levon’s mastery of lighting, framing, and post processing allows the details and naturally vibrant colors of these creatures really stand out.
And if you happen to find yourself in Oxford, England between May 27 and the end of October, you can check out an exhibition of Levon’s work—printed on massive 10-feet wide posters—at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Even if you’re squeamish around bugs, you’ll still be captivated by his photos.
