High-end cable fans, get your New Balances on and run! Run to the Amazon, because it's flogging HDMI super high-resolution cable from DVI Gear for a measly $2. Yep, you heard. Two. Bucks. Our tipster Jon put it thus: "Holy Crap 2 dollar 6 foot HDMI cables," adding that the cheapest he'd ever seen was around seven times that amount. The closest competitor we could find via Google was OutletPC with a $4 version. UPDATE: Editorial Assistant Benny, the Artist formerly known as Bennytheintern, tells me that he bought some last summer for a bit more than a buck from the same place. Still a good deal, though. That's crazy cheap.
But is it TOO crazy cheap?
I guess as long as everything stays connected and doesn't short it's good.
They're sure cheap to replace so maybe just buy five of 'em and keep spares, I guess, right?
I bet you cant tell the difference between these and monster cables.
holy crap! i bought a new samsung lcd in ireland just after xmas and they guy in the shop tried to sell me nearly the same cable for €150 (nearly $220)!!
i'm tempted to buy a truck load and start selling them outside their shop...
@desostros: Digital is digital.
i spent $6 on my 6ft cable, and it's absolutely fine
Monoprice.com has great deals on HDMI cables too.
But you need the gold plated, nitrogen injected, diamond encrusted monster cable to really enjoy the picture.
@Carbonfly: The cheapest I can find is this ugly blue one, for $3.72 + $2.78 shipping = $6.50, making it like $1.50 more than Amazon ... I'm not a bargain hunter though, is there another one I'm missing?
I thought cable vendor didn't matter and recently bought some very cheap 3-foot HDMI cables. I spent hours pre-Super Bowl trying to hook up projector/cable box... only to discover that it was the HDMI cables not allowing a signal, just absolutely no picture (3 foot cable!). Trial and error and using better cables fixed my no-picture problems. I was sort of shocked. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but still.
Ripley's Believe It or Not...
'better' cables will allow less interference between devices because most of the cheap cables use less shielding in them. 'better' cables also allow for longer runs due resistance in the wires being lower than the cheap cables.
With that said, you can use these just fine as a previous poster noted: "Digital is digital"
So long as you know cheap has it's limitations.
@desostros: in a 6-foot length? Not on yer life. Maybe over 20 or 30 feet. See Giz's cheap-vs-moderate-vs-overpriced HDMI battle a while back (forget exactly what they called it off the top of my head). They concluded that unless you're going to be running it very long distances, or permanently installing it (say, inside a wall) and thus in need of future-proofing, the cheap stuff will do ya just fine.
my only worry is that the connectors would get messed up, but then again, thats a chance i'm willing to take since ill probably buy them by the dozen.
@desostros:
yes I can - cost.
I've bought several of these in the past...picture is great. If you want to pay for monster cable, fine...I can't honestly see any signs of interference in these, and have been using them for around 6 months now.
Can someone, ANYONE, PLEASE USE THE BANHAMMER ON @iguide:
First: If you're gonna spam a website in the US, spam it in ENGLISH!
Second: Don't spam the site SIX times in SIX minutes.
Third: You suck!
For what its worth, DON'T CLICK THE@iguide: LINK people!
@TerryinSt.Paul: Thought we got iguide over the weekend, thanks for looking out.
For what its worth, I just ordered a few. If I have any problems with the seller or the product, I will post once they arrive.
@Benny Goldman: You're right benny. I like that I can get different color HDMI cables so that I don't have to figure out which black HDMI cable is going where. Now I just have to see that I want to find the cable that's blue, red, or white, etc.
six feet you say? Does it come coiled up in a pink canister labled "bubble tape"?
Seriously though, can you buy six feet of...anything for this price?
I paid $0.15 for a 6ft cable at amazon marketplace last week... +$4.98 shipping... does that count?
I paid $0.50 for one once and I think it was about $5 shipping. The company actually put threw in an extra by mistake so make that $0.25 for each.
@xrmb: Yeah me too...I always pay between $0.15 and $0.85, with between $2.98 and $4.98 s&h, from places like SF Planet and EForcity, all through Amazon. My whole theater is set up with those cables. Full HD looks amazing, no artifacts (except the ones coming out of my cable box, which has nothing to do with the cables and everything to do with crappy timewarnercable).
I tried to order some of these about two weeks ago...I placed my order and got an e-mail two days later saying my order was cancelled because they were out of stock.
What's the difference between that one and this one which is listed at $0.26? [www.amazon.com]
I've been using these 2 dollar cables (one is DVI-HDMI) for over a month now. PS3 and digital cable both look great and all my cables cost less than a DVD.
I lied and told a audio-video-snob that I was using Monster. He said "You see the difference now?"
Monoprice FTW. I've been very happy with their cables, which are all in this basic price range. You also get the consistency of ordering from a known place. The Amazon stuff seems to be random collections of third-party vendor's stuff, so who knows what it is or how long it will last. There may be no need for fancy cables, but you do want something that will be durable enough to last through several plug/unplug cycles, especially if you have limited HDMI ports and are constantly swapping.
I bought two of these cheapo cables a while back, and there is one drawback that I found. For my upscaling DVD player, it works great...but for my HD cable box, there is a real lag (as much as 5-10 seconds) when changing channels, or going from live TV to recorded shows. I seem to remember reading that this lag can be expected from the ultra-cheap cables...but not necessarily for regular mid-range cables. But I can't back that up at the moment.
I have bought a total of 6 of these cables from DVI Gear...I stumbled upon them on Amazon like 4 months ago. They are made by someone named "inspire" (as you will find inscribed on the cable itself). I have bought some cheapo HDMI cables before to find that they just look and feel cheap...not the case with these. DOWN WITH MONSTER!!!!
HDMI sucks!!!
Yes, digital is digital, and therefore any conductor works, but packing all your signals into one cable is the stupidest idea the industry has devised yet.
HDMI cables require internal shielding to prevent the audio signals from interfering with the video -- cheap cables don't have this, and expensive cables overcharge you for it.
I wish DVI were still the one and only digital video interface. No signal bleed-through problems, secure connections, and impeccable quality without the need for expensive cable shielding. Unfortunately, much HD equipment does not offer DVI connectors these days, so I always use HDMI/DVI adapters on DVI cable. This allows you to use the cheapest DVI cable with no quality issues whatsoever (as long as you don't zip-tie your audio cables in parallel to the DVI cable).
monprice cables are shielded.
The royalty to HDMI is $.10 per connector. Doesn't seem like there is monster profits to be had at $2.00 retail.
Make sure you get you go for the cables eligible for free shipping by Amazon; it saves the hassle of having to track down some 3rd party for a $5 cable. Here's the link to another 6 footer, where you can used your overpriced Amazon Prime membership. -[www.amazon.com]
Oh, and just to buck the trend... Fuck Monoprice
And they are marked up 80%.
I bought one of these weeks ago, they work fine. I ordered another one a week ago.
Regardless it's better than the 50 dollar cables they're selling at radioshack, which mark up cables more than frat boys mark up a passed out brother
Not all cheap cables are worth buying, but there are cheap ones that are fine. Monoprice for one. Fuhq monster cable, total rip off.
Monkeyboy, your channel changing speed is your box, it's not your cable. I have yet to see a HD box that changes channels very fast. (TWC, Direct TV, or DishNet, Panasonic plasma running OTA) They all lag on HD channels.
OMFG WOW THEYVE BEEN THAT PRICE ON AMAZON FOR EVER!
i bought some at that price like six months ago.
they also sell a really cheap wooden knob for people trying to get over the 25 free shipping hump. is that news?
Lab test proves generic HDMI works just as well as expensive crapola: [www.popularmechanics.com]
Best Buy Online - $2 HDMI cable w/ $88 processing and shipping.
i swear by www.firefold.com
I bet they only transmit ones ... not zeros.
That's why they're so cheap.
I ordered these cables from Amazon a couple of months ago for the same price. There's nothing special about them; they just get the job done.
Well, that, and the fact that I get an ego-boost from knowing that I just saved enough money for a quick night out at the bar. Can't hate on that.
Yeah, I bought a 6-foot cable for 5 bucks a few months ago for my Xbox and it works superbly.
monoprice.com rules them all. Not quite as cheap as this amazon deal, but cheap nonetheless and high quality. The only difference between monoprice cables and monster cables is the name.
(and the price)
it was $0.15 at amazon a few months ago actually that was the lowest i saw!
if i still had the link id send it in to you guys, but i dont think the price would be the same anymore.
