After the Frank Miller-influenced The Dark Knight conquered the box office, it makes sense to make another movie about Daredevil, the other superhero Miller made awesome. But a reboot from the writer of The Day The Earth Stood Still? No!
The L.A. Times is reporting that New Regency, the Fox-affiliated company that produced the original Daredevil in 2003, has finally gotten around to greenlighting another film featuring the blind Avenger. But the studio has hired David Scarpa, the writer who managed to take the classic Day The Earth Stood Still, and turn it into a shlocky nightmare about eco-friendly aliens who want to wipe out humanity — just as soon as they've eaten at McDonald's. Seriously, the Keanu Reeves-starring remake wasn't just an insult to the original, it also betrayed a serious lack of storytelling. There was no third act: Keanu just sort of delivers a bunch of speeches, and then things grind to a halt.
I shudder to think what the architect of that unholy mess will do to Matt Murdoch — probably a film in which Matt angsts for two hours, and then just slinks home to get drunk instead of fighting the Kingpin in the end.
