A short animation about the world’s first intentional LSD trip

On April 19, 1943, chemist Albert Hofmann intentionally ingested LSD, and felt the drug’s hallucinogenic effects while riding his bicycle home. This short animation imagines what that journey home might have looked like from inside Hofmann’s mind.

Lorenzo Veracini, Nandini Nambiar, and Marco Avoletta made their 2007 short film A Bicycle Trip as a way to place Hofmann’s fateful ride in the visual context of 1940s Basel, Switzerland. It isn’t meant to be a historically accurate version of the ride (for one thing, Hofmann didn’t ride alone but with an assistant), but rather meant to add a touch of psychedelia to the world Hofmann inhabited.
